1998 Performers The Eagles Fleetwood Mac The Mamas and the Papas Lloyd Price Santana Gene Vincent Early influences Jelly Roll Morton Non-performers Allen Toussaint This is kinda the year where most of us grew up with the songs on our AM radio. Eagles, no question of course, for both hits and influence. But when, oh when is Poco going in?? Especially because the Eagles were Poco-wannabes! (Sorry, I have to say that everytime! ) And there was NO question the Mac would go in, but this was before the hit making lineup was together. I always felt they invited Peter Green to the ceremony to justify them going in at this point. Doesn't matter, I love them, and it was 25 years after their debut! (And the early lineup was influential and unique.) The Mamas and Papas were another artists I had forgotten about. But now I'm thinking, they should have maybe gone in sooner! Santana was one I had thought about like a year before of how they should certainly go in for incorporating the Latin sound into mainstream rock-n-roll. Lloyd and Gene going in this much later made sense, but I feel Gene deserved it more than Lloyd.

Eagles & Mac going in was more just a matter of time. Maybe Fleetwood Mac should have been in a year or two earlier than this, but sometimes it's just the making it in that counts. Interesting that Santana's biggest hit up to 1998 was a cover of a Fleetwood Mac song (Black Magic Woman). Santana certainly deserving. Carlos is one of the top 10 or 15 guitar players (imo). Mamas & Papas certainly for the influence in the mid 60s folk scene. Not a big Gene Vincent fan, so I'd probably keep Lloyd Price, who I like, a make Gene wait.

This is undoubtedly my favorite year for the Hall.
The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and the Mamas and the Papas are three of the greatest bands of all-time and I feel they were all extremely deserving of induction. I think it was nice of them to put the early Fleetwood Mac lineup in, but it would have really made more sense for them to wait and just let the classic line-up in (which would have pushed them back to 2002). I don't deny that the early line-up was influential, but they got way more exposure in their native Britain than they did here in the US. On the other hand, I'm glad FM got in when they did, so I have no complaints.

This is one year where I agree with all the inductees. I thiught about Lloyd for a couple of minutes. But the guy was cranking out huge R&B AND RockNRoll hits from the early '50s through the mid '60s. Definitely deserves it. Gene Vincent also, was one of the early rock superstars. The guy he most resembled, Eddie Cochran, had been in 11 years already. Nothing could keep the others out.

A very strong group. As Woody mentioned, Fleetwood Mac probably should have gone in a bit earlier, but still great to see them there. Lloyd Price would probably be the one I'd leave out if I had to.
