1999
Performers
Billy Joel Curtis Mayfield Paul McCartney Del Shannon Dusty Springfield Bruce Springsteen The Staple Singers
Early influences
Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys Charles Brown
Non-performers
George Martin
Billy Joel, in for longevity, hits and his writing. Not much of a "rocker" and I woulda waited a few years to induct him. Curtis Mayfield. I never would have thought of him. On one of the earlier posts, Ed argued (nicely) that Marvin could've waited a couple years. If he could, then Curtis could've been held back longer. Macca. He daughter's shirt that night said it all-"It's about fucking time!" Del. They waited awhile because he wasn't as prolific as some of the others from that inbetween era, like Dion or The Four Seasons. So they waited the right amount of time, IMO. Dusty I wouldn't have previously thought of, but for her time, she was a premiere female singer. But before Connie?? Bruce. You knew it was coming. He's the critics darling. The Staple Singers. Again, I wouldn't have thought about them. If I had to ditch one this year, it'd be them or Curtis. As for George Martin, I'll echo Paul's daughter again, it's about fucking time.

They keep on coming great and strong! Though like many of his hits, would take out Del. I don't see how he was THAT much better than others from his time--maybe not as much schlock...
Curtis and the Staples were very important R & B acts of the 70's, with Curtis being VERY influential with his brand of "Chicago soul".
And George Martin? (and um...Paul solo) It's about F'in time!!!

Great, GREAT group! I remember watching the inductions on VH-1, and Paul was obviously drunk on his ass, still mourning the loss of Linda. I felt really bad for him.

Paul, Del, & Bruce, about time they got in. Dusty should be in, but as Adam said, not before Connie Francis. Billy Joel, probably a little early for him, but what do I know. I like Curtis & the Staples, probably take out Curtis or Billy if anyone from the list. George, again about time. I got earful of Bob Wills growing up (one of my Dad's favorite groups). Nice to see him & his Texas Playboys get a nod.

Again, no complaints from me. This is a very good line-up.

Of this list, Paul is the most deserving, and should have been in years before this, along with George Martin. But there are quite a few other strong candidates in this class. Dusty was a great choice, but I agree with you and Woody that Connie should have been first.

Paul McCartney needed to be in ten years earlier.
No argument with Billy Joel. A lot of inductees are not "real" rockers.
Curtis Mayfield -- absolutely. Should have gone in earlier, IMO. (Actually he did -- with the Imprsssions)
Del Shannon - Didn't see it at first until I went back and researched his career AFTER his Runaway days. He would have made a great Wilbury too.
Dusty - Why before Connie, why before Brenda, and for that matter, why before Petula Clark? Not that I'm promoting Petula, but there is not that much difference between Dusty and Petula (Except maybe for that great song with the Pet Shop Boys)
Bruce - Uh yeah.
Staples -- Hard to see what sets them apart.

Then he died, and I thought what about Clapton. But then I didn't want him to die. The curse of the 5th Wilbury. Are you kidding about the Pet Shop Boys song? (I HATE that song!!) Not only those ladies, but what about Lesley Gore? It took me reading a CD review the other day to realize she was one of the first (THE first?) women to be strong in her songs (You Don't Own Me, Judy's Turn to Cry, etc) as opposed to the usual fare.

Yeah I knew about the Orby replacement thing. And Del didn't just die, he shot himself. Have you heard the Del/pseudo Wilbury recording of Walk Away? Don't know who and how many Wilburys were on it, but I heard it was kind of an audition for Del. Fantastic song, and I could imagine Roy singing lead on it. Actually I love that Dusty/Pet Shop Boys song - but I WAS kidding about that being the reason she got into the Hall. Totally agree with you on Lesley. I'd forgotten about her. Definitely should be considered.

My dad has a comeback album from around the time that has all kinds of Wilbury involvement and my dad says every song is about love lost. Haven't heard the song you mentioned but why would the guy even have to audition? The Dusty part is ok, but that guy's monotone voice is just horrible! Right up there with Michael Stipe and Billy Corgan! Actually worse than theirs.

I've heard it called an "audition" on a website or two, but I don't know if it really was. There are a couple of albums that are unofficially called Wilbury 2 and Wilbury 4, and I think this is on one of them. Funny, but I think the monotone makes the song. It really works for me there. I admit, I wouldn't want to have to listen to an album full of it, but the one song is fine.

Well the curse was the next guy they chose was really depressed and it didn't work since he did himself in! LOL I found a website a few weeks back that was selling Wilbury 2, 4, 3.5, etc. I saved the link, I'll have to check which that's on. Good prices too!

Just one more bit of Trivia: Walk Away was co-written by Del, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.
