Dawn just mentioned to me that they have a Timeless Rock station in her area, so I asked her to listen for what artists are being played. I have noticed that the definition of "Classic" "Oldies" and "Rock" differ from city to city, so I am wondering about Timeless Rock. I wanted to do this discussion for awhile now.
So what in your city constitutes "Classic Rock". I've notice people mention hearing Rush or AC/DC. The old Classic Rock stations didn't play them until right near the end as they started to change formats and were even adding in Great White and Aldo Nova.
Now here, all those artists get "Rock" radio play. Rock radio here is Stones, Who, Hendrix, Zep, Sabbath, VH, Journey, Foreigner, Motely Crue, Metallica, Guns-n-Roses, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Creed, Jet. Getting some, but not as much play is Steve Miller, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers. Very limited on those. Same with the Beatles. Very rare on them.
The old Classic rock here would play those artists, minus Sabbath and everything from Crue onward. Classic is more like Mellencamp, Cocker, Crosby, Stills & Nash, America, Fleetwood Mac, Yardbirds, CCR, etc.
Oldies is almost NO 50s. Occasionally an Elvis tune, that's it. It' similar to the now Timeless Rock, but they play more 60's pop like Herman, Supremes, Petula Clark, etc and 70s bubblegummy stuff.
So are your stations just like this?

LOL--it's hard to say 'cuz I don't listen to the radio very much anymore. I will have to check them out again. BTW, our computers at work are down so now I'm at lunch break and I'm in a computer store using theirs (and paying for it ). 2 computers behind me, there are a bunch of guys crowded around a computer doing some kind of auction online. There's sound on the computer, and they're not wearing headphones, so I keep hearing "Going once, going twice" over and over! It's about to drive me batty! I need to get outta here soon anyway if I'm going to get back to work on time.

I don't really listen to oldies or classic rock radio. I know all of the songs, and if I like them I'll just play the CD (so I'll also get to hear the deep album cuts I prefer).
I've been listening to newer music stations, trying to keep up with current stuff, as well as re-currents from the past 7-10 years. Some of it isn't too bad, and some of it is crap. Basically hit-or-miss, but I guess it's what's out now.

In Seattle:
"Oldies" is exactly the same as you described Sat, except the station here does seem to play more 50s music too.
"Timeless Rock" is super broad here and is considered CSN, CCR, Poco, Eagles, Beatles, and pretty much ANYTHING pre 1990 from artists ranging from Petty to Mellencamp, to Elton John and Eddie Money.
"Classic Rock" is harder stuff from the 60s and 70s like Cream, Zep, Who, Sabbath, Zebra etc.
In Seattle we also have "alternative rock" stations that play any and all music from all of the bands that made it big in the grunge scene plus any and every thing that's considered not mainstream rock from the late 70s, 80s, 90s and forward. You might hear Modest Mouse, and then something from The Cure, and then the Sex Pistols, and then something from Velvet Revolver.
Finally, Seattle also has a station that describe themselves as "timeless rock" and in fact play some pre 90 things that the other station does, but they also play all of the new folk-rock music and popular current people like John Mayer and Jason Mraz etc. and artists like Collective Soul.

Ok, does Jack have any other description besides "Playing What We Want". The one artist that sticks out there is Men at Work. Would they play like Duran Duran? Or Ambrosia? (Weird examples, I know.) The Classic rock sounds like our old ones except they didn't really play Bryan Adams til the end, and they never played Costello. The oldies is pretty much like ours-but how far into the 70s do they go?

Yes, almost exactly!
There are two stations here that started out as Classic Rock, 98.5 and 106.3, but they've been adding more and more newer artists such as Fuel, Nickelback, Pearl Jam, etc. to the playlist in the past year or two, so they would probably be considered more Rock now. As with the Rock station in your area, they play very little Beatles or the other artists you mentioned.
There is one station, 104.9, that still plays only Classic Rock - Doors, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Aerosmith, etc., but their transmitter is located a bit too far north to pick up at home, although I can pull it in the car.
The two Oldies stations, 93.1 and 96.1, sound pretty much like yours. 93.1 plays a bit more '50s than 96.1, but even then it's not that much compared to '60s or early '70s. Once in a while I'll hear a mid-to-late '70s hit on one of them, but no '80s at all.
The new Timeless Rock station I mentioned in PMs is very cool! So far I've heard early Beatles, Stones, Stevie Wonder, Fleetwood Mac, America, Jim Croce, Boz Scaggs, John Mellencamp - even Tears for Fears!

Similar to what Pete said, I really rarely listen to the radio these days. I just pop in a CD. But when I do listen, it'll be to the local oldies station. These guys, about ten years ago were announcing that they were the "sixties station" and they played mostly 60s but had a large amount of '50s as well as early '70s. Now they have become "your sixties and seventies station" and play almost no '50s at all. Kinda pisses me off - although I DO like the wider selection of '70s. Ideally, I would LOVE a station that says "OK...the Rock era started in '55 (or thereabouts). So .. as an oldies station, we will play ANYTHING and EVERYTHING from '55 until ten years ago (or five even)". And then they would play a stady stream of ALL the music we talk about here on The Click, and NOT replay ANYTHING until they've gone through it all. Yeah. THAT's gonna happen.

Nope that's it Yes I've heard Duran Duran - stuff like Rio and Hungry Like The Wolf. I'm not quite sure if I've heard them play Ambrosia or not. The oldies station I believe goes up to about 1974.

The four stations that I have listened to in this area are an Oldies Station, Lite Rock, Classic Rock, & one station that plays a nice mixture of Current Rock & Classic Rock.
The oldies is pretty much 60s & early 70s AM rock kind of music. On the Lite Rock station I've heard everything from Santana's Smooth to the Dixie Chicks Landslide, so if it kind of easy on the ears, the Lite Rock station will play it. In Topeka, they have a station that plays Classic Rock, pretty much Stones, Who, Allmans, you know those guys.
The Rock/Classic Rock station plays mostly the really loud Classic Rock (AC/DC, Aerosmith, hair bands, Pink Floyd, etc) & the Foo Fighters, Collective Soul, people like that. I've also heard Stevie Ray & George Thorogood on this station. Best radio station in the area, IMO. They also have Bob & Tom in the morning, a great way to wake up.
