I am trying to find ANY CD copy of their version of "Norwegian Wood"... This was intended by Jan Berry to be a radical departure for the group, as well as a chance to break from Liberty Records, who were not pleased with Jan's independence--they wanted the group to stick with their "funny beach bum" persona. It is an incredible production--those who have only heard the album track version don't know what they are missing. While the album version is rather overproduced, the single is impeccable, and almost has a surf "wall of sound" feel. Apparently Berry recorded three versions--one unreleased, one for the 45, and one earlier for an album, Filet of Soul, heard here... www.jananddean.moonfruit.com/#/filetofsoul/4514844072Unfortunately, it was about to be released when Jan had his tragic accident...and Dean Torrence, who HATED the song, convinced Liberty (with very little opposition) to issue the flip side, a long forgotten track called "Popsicle", as the "A" side. Don't be confused--"Popsicle" is annoying pop, and would never have been released had Jan not wrecked his car, and his mind. "Norwegian Wood" is the "cover song classic" that sadly never was...

Well, Grem, for a minute I thought I was going to be able to help you. I have a ton of J&D 45s (including Baby Talk) and I KNEW I had Popsicle. Well, I have Popsicle all right - on the Drag City LP. That album version of Norwegian Wood is not bad. I would love to hear the 45.

It's not in the best of shape, though...I also found a 78 of "Jennie Lee" by Jan and Arnie years ago--it's the second most valuable record that I own, behind an Elvis EP that is worth an obsene amount for reasons totally unclear. If you find it, get the single version--the production is cleaner, and the horns (which on the album sound a bit over the top) is replaced by a haunting Dean falsetto singing basically the same backing harmony. From what I've discovered, Torrence went to the level of personally stamping DJ promo copies himself to make sure that "Norwegian Wood" never got any publicity.

I find that sometime, the most obscure things are found on the so-called free download sites. Some people will just upload a bunch of singles, A and B sides. I' ll give it a look. I have Jennie Lee also. Actually bought it when it was new. -But I have the 45, and I don't think it's particularly valuable. What Elvis EP do you have? I have three. Two of them are Volumes one and two of what was just called "Elvis" - there is a side view of Elvis on the covers - same picture used on the LP. Includes Blue Suede Shoes, Tutti Fruiti, Old Shep, Paralyzed, Reddy Teddy, Rip it Up and more. The other one (can't recall the title) includes Don't Be Cruel, Hound Dog, IWant You I Need You I Love You and My Baby Left Me.

I found a version that is definitely different thatn the one at the linf you posted. For one thing that one is timed at 1:52; the one I found is 2:12. In addition, the horns are more prominent in your link, and more subdued in the one I found. Also, in the one I found, the horns are interspersed with a falsetto counterpoint. In your link, I don't hear that at all. The only thing is, that who ever posted it listed in the properties Album "Little Old Lady from Pasadena/Filet of Soul" So I'm not sure what that means. Anyway, if you give me an email address that can accept about 3MB (PM it to me) I will be glad to send it to you.
