This is a real tough one, Joe. I heard Marianne's version first - it charted about a year earlier than the Stone's version. Mick and Keith actually wrote the song for Marianne. It's also her signature song. For the Stone's it was somewhat a step out of the box. They had the bigger hit with it - But more important, there is not a whole lot of difference in the two versions, at least the way I hear it. If the cover were by some unknown group you'd have never heard of it. But it was THE STONES. I'll go with The Stones by a whisker. Ask me tomorrow, I might say Marianne. |
