Going through my 45's I found this: How common were these? I didn't think 45's were *that* expensive an item to warrant a B-sideless release. By the time I started buying music 45's weren't available in stores anymore so I missed these the first time around. In my thrift shopping I've only ever seen 1 other of these, a copy of Neil Diamond's "Heartlight", but it was scratched all to heck and they wanted some insane amount of money for it (I think it was $2) and I really don't care for that song so I left it there.

I'm pretty sure the live version of Paul McCartney's Coming Up was a one-sided single. It came with the LP "McCartney II" as a 45 RPM extra. I will have to look for it to verify, but I'm pretty sure it didn't have anything on the other side.

The commercial single release had the studio version on one side, and 2 tracks on the b-side. The live version (which was not intended to be the hit) and a short instrumental called "Lunch Box/Odd Sox". Since the live version picked up the airplay by fluke, the McCartney II album came with a bonus one-sided single of the live version. Inexplicably, the CD reissue does not include the live version as a bonus track...

The studio version on one side, and the live version and Lunch Box/ Old Sox on the other.

Ah.....interesting. Yeah, I have the one-sided single that came with the original LP, so no Lunchbox/Odd Socks in my world.

Well Pete, we now have baby strollers that have instructions on them that say "remove baby before folding up stroller" and coffee cups that say "contents may be hot." So maybe we do need to over inform a certain part of our population.

It went to #47 on the Billboard Chart. Do you remember that song?'

Every time I'd put it on, the tone arm would slide off and go "KGUGHHHHHHHHHH". What a rip-off!

I had an older aunt and uncle that liked disco. One summer when I was visiting them, I noticed the 12" single for "No More Tears/Enough Is Enough" by Donna Summer & Barbra Streisand on the Casablanca label. The flip side left the owner with implicit instrutions: DO NOT PLAY. THIS SIDE DOES NOT PLAY! Of course, the weird cross-grooved pattern should have been a red flag for even most clueless! By the way, I wish there was a way I could have inherited that 12" single! I also do have a copy of "Coming Up" on 45. I agree, "Lunch Box, Odd Sox" isn't a very good b-side.

There's another similar story of one of John Lennon's early horrid albums with Yoko--it was released to music critics as a test pressing, with only one side recorded, and the flip was actually grooved, but only emitted a buzzing sound when played. One critic, unaware of the pressing situation, wrote in his review that he preferred the side with the buzz noise!

The only one-sided 45 that I can think of in my collection is "Gloria" by the Jimi Hendrix Experience...it came as a bonus single with Jimi's Greatest Hits Pt. 2...it is essentially a jam session cutting that was put out at 33rpm on the single--it is now worth more than the albun it came with--but, not by much.
