Most of us (if not all) know of Johnny Horton's big history hits. Battle of New Orleans, Sink the Bismarck, etc. Here's one of my Johnny favorites. A sad song, but one I've also liked. Kinda of old guy thing. Remember trading a book for Johnny's Greatest Hits Album back in the early 70s. Still got it. It's a very stiff vinyl record, well used, but enjoyed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUdIgb4zfKs&feature=PlayList&p=6B6D5C09B74C019B&index=3

Like you say, I knew Johnny mostly for his "history lesson" songs, but he was also quite adept at country ballads. Johnny is yet another artist who was taken from us too early - in his case FAR too early. He was killed in an auto accident at the age of 35 in 1960.

I knew Johnny had passed away quite some time ago, but didn't realize he was only 35 at the time. That's so young. Mark has always been a fan of Johnny's - he can do dead-on versions of Battle of New Orleans and Sink the Bismarck - and we have his greatest hits on LP as well. It's been a while since I've heard the record, but this is a really nice track, with a great classic sound.
