Our scale: 5.0 - A song you absolutely love, one of your absolute favorites 4.0 - While not quite top-tier, a song you enjoy a lot 3.0 - Not a favorite, but you basically like it 2.0 - A "meh" song, you could take it or leave it 1.0 - Yikes! Turn that song off! **************************************************** Harden My Heart - Quarterflash 4.0 (always liked this group's music; Rindy Ross' sax work added a nice extra touch) We're An American Band - Grand Funk 3.5 Eight Miles High - Byrds 4.0 (one of my favorites by the group. This is another song I remember from my very early childhood) Jack and Diane - John Cougar Mellencamp 2.5 (not a bad song, but I've heard it a few times too many) Tin Man - America 5.0 (absolutely love this!) Duke of Earl - Gene Chandler 2.0 Come Dancing - Kinks 3.25 More Than A Feeling - Boston 4.0 Up, Up and Away - 5th Dimension 4.5 (this has such a great carefree quality to it) Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon 1.75 (not as fond of this as their '70s or early '80s work) Superstar - Carpenters 4.75 (one of the finest vocal performances ever. What's even more amazing is that Karen's vocal was recorded in just one take. She was phenomenally gifted) Love Me Do - Beatles 4.0 All Night Long - Lionel Richie 3.0 (this is ok on occasion, but I tire of it quickly if I hear it too often) Shambala - Three Dog Night 4.0 Reflections - Supremes 3.5

Harden My Heart - Quarterflash 2.0
We're An American Band - Grand Funk 2.0
Eight Miles High - Byrds 5.0 (one of the best ever. Unforgettable opening, good vocals, distinctive guitar work, said to be influenced by John Coltrane and Indian ragas)
Jack and Diane - John Cougar Mellencamp 2.0 (you could just change one letter, and it would be the story of Jack & Duane!)
Tin Man - America 2.0 (so that's what the Wizard of Oz was all about!)
Duke of Earl - Gene Chandler 2.0
Come Dancing - Kinks 4.0 (bittersweet nostalgic song)
More Than A Feeling - Boston 2.0
Up, Up and Away - 5th Dimension 4.0 (I think it was their first on the radio)
Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon 2.0
Superstar - Carpenters 3.75
Love Me Do - Beatles 2.0 (well, even a supergroup has to start somewhere, I guess)
All Night Long - Lionel Richie 2.0
Shambala - Three Dog Night 1.0 (isn't it Shambhala, with another H?) (update: apparently not, but they got it wrong) (update: is this update feature new? I like it!)
Reflections - Supremes 3.5 (Motown goes psychedelic; world survives)

I'm sitting here in my hotel room SW of Chicago, and the stupid computer won't let me download one of my work files, so I can't do what I wanna do. --- That's not true... actually I'd rather talk to you guys anyway. Harden My Heart - Quarterflash 3.3 Pretty good song, but not from an era where I was as deeply into music as I was at other times. We're An American Band - Grand Funk 3.4 Good song, although not my favorite by them. I have this on a yellow plastic 45. Eight Miles High - Byrds 3.7 Better than Turn Turn Turn but not as good as Mr. Tambourine Man (which are the benchmarks by which I gauge Byrds songs. Jack and Diane - John Cougar Mellencamp 3.0 I agree; overplayed. But I've always kinda liked it. - sorta Tin Man - America 2.8 Sorry, Dawn. Never cared that much for this one. The lyrics are good, but as a melody, it just kinda leaves me flat. Duke of Earl - Gene Chandler 3.5 This is just a fun song. I think Gene Chandler had a lot of fun with this. - and it's become one of those early '60s classics. Come Dancing - Kinks 2.9 I like many Kinks somgs better. More Than A Feeling - Boston 4.2 I probably like only 2 or 3 (at most) Boston songs better. Up, Up and Away - 5th Dimension 2.4 I was kind of neutral to this at first, and then they played it so.....much.....! Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon 3.0 I've always liked their sound. This is not their best though. Superstar - Carpenters 4.1 I think this was just in a facebook lyrics quiz that I answered - about a week or so ago. Very pretty song; one of their best. Love Me Do - Beatles 3.3 If it were anyone but the Beatles, it would be ranked a lot lower. Of that first group of about 20 or so Beatles songs that I heard for the first time in early 1964, this was close to the bottom. All Night Long - Lionel Richie 2.7 Just seemed like one of Lionel's weaker efforts. Shambala - Three Dog Night 2.9 The only worse 3DN song that I know is Black and White. Reflections - Supremes 3.1 Not bad, but, I thought, a fairly weak attempt to do something psychedelic. Ladies, it take something more than a couple of strange noises to make a psychedelic song.

Harden My Heart - Quarterflash 3.0 (The first concert I ever went to was opened by Quarterflash. Never much into the song, but it's okay. Wasn't this their only hit?)
We're An American Band - Grand Funk 3.0 (Totally reminds me of the movie "Spirit of '76", which if you haven't seen it, it's a must. Especially you, dear Dawnie.)
Eight Miles High - Byrds 4.0 (One of my faves from the Byrds. I love how trippy it sounds)
Jack and Diane - John Cougar Mellencamp 2.0
Tin Man - America 4.8 (So many songs by America just take me back to one of the most euphoric times of my life when I was about 4. I could listen to this all day.)
Duke of Earl - Gene Chandler 2.0
Come Dancing - Kinks 2.5
More Than A Feeling - Boston 3.5 (This is an overplayed song on so many classic rock stations, but it's good.)
Up, Up and Away - 5th Dimension 5.0 (One of my faves. I was actually introduced to this song via Sesame Street! Back when cassette tapes began to become popular, my dad had a 5th Dimension tape with this song on it. I played that thing until it was warped.)
Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon 3.0
Superstar - Carpenters 4.8 (This is such a sad song, but I can't resist the Carpenters. I love it!)
Love Me Do - Beatles 4.0 (Love the Beatles as I do, this isn't one of my faves, although I'll give it a 4.0)
All Night Long - Lionel Richie 2.0 (This song was overplayed in the day, and for some reason it reminds me of being in the 8th grade and polishing my fingernails this horrible purple color.)
Shambala - Three Dog Night 4.0
Reflections - Supremes 2.0 (This song was definitely influenced by the psychedelic era, but the sound effects (Moog?) just don't sound like they fit in.)

You have some great picks today, Dawn. Here's my input on today's songs: Harden My Heart - Quarterflash 3.0 A song from my youth. Liked when I was a kid. Sax solo from Mindy Ross is cool. I thought she was pretty hot when I was 11! We're An American Band - Grand Funk 4.0 Had the 45 as a kid and really dug the driving beat. One the most underrated bands of the 70's! Jack And Diane - John Cougar Mellencamp 3.5 I realize this song is over-played. However, the hand claps that start and finish the record make it irresistible. ;D Tin Man - America 2.75 There are other songs by America that are much better than this one. I could never get into it. Duke of Earl - Gene Chandler 2.90 My brother was a big fan of oldies radio back in the late 80's. But an oldies station wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole today! Maybe I should give it another listen. Come Dancing - Kinks 4.0 Maybe not as great as their 60's or early 70's stuff. But I loved hearing this song played on the radio in the summer of 1983! More Than A Feeling - Boston 5.0 Brad Delp had great pipes. Tom Scholz is a wonderful guitar player and songwriter! Up Up And Away - the Fifth Dimension 3.0 Great harmonies in this group. Billy Davis & Marylin Maccoo had such great chemistry together. I recently heard them on a radio interview. They have been married close to 40 years! Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon 2.50 It's a little to syrupy for my tastes. Superstar - Carpenters 4.75 Great songwriting from Leon Russell! Karen Carpenter had such a phenomenal voice! Love Me Do - Beatles 3.25 Not my favorite Beatles song. But for their first single, it was a sign of great things to come! Little Steven played this on his radio show this weekend and stated it was his favorite song from the fab four. All Night Long - Lionel Richie 3.0 In the 80's, Lionel Richie was everywhere. Never a huge fan, but respected his talent. I saw him open for Tina Turner back in 2000. He is a great showman! Shambala - Three Dog Night 3.5 Another underrated group from the 70's. This band had a knack for finding great material! Reflections - Supremes 4.25 This was one of the few Supremes songs to miss #1. I remember the song as being the theme from the TV show China Beach. It may be my favorite Supremes song next to "Someday We'll Be Together."

Harden My Heart - Quarterflash 4.5 An excellent tune, I remember hearing this many times. I recorded it off the radio when it was current. I sometimes wonder whatever happened to Rindy Ross. I still remember watching one of the American Bandstand Anniversary shows and she was included in the "all star" band jam they had at the end. I think the clip may be up on you tube. We're An American Band - Grand Funk 5.0 This was played many times in our house back in '73 / '74 by my middle brother, who still has the 45. To this day it's still his all time favorite Grand Funk song. Eight Miles High - Byrds 5.0 Yup, it's a classic. This is one of a few Byrds songs' I can play on guitar, all except for that crazy solo! lol Jack and Diane - John Cougar Mellencamp 4.3 Tin Man - America 5.0 This was also one of many songs I heard when I was little (what a soundtrack that was!) Duke of Earl - Gene Chandler 3.0 Come Dancing - Kinks 3.5 More Than A Feeling - Boston 4.0 Brad sure could sing, what a voice! Up, Up and Away - 5th Dimension 4.5 (Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon 3.0 Superstar - Carpenters 4.25 I agree, what a voice! Love Me Do - Beatles 5.0 All Night Long - Lionel Richie 3.2 I still recall seeing the video on Friday Night Videos. A song I haven't heard in quite sometime (Shambala - Three Dog Night 5.0 Simply terrific, love the acoustic intro. I always thought it was a 12 string, but I could be wrong. Reflections - Supremes 4,0 I like this one quite a bit. Locally it's not anywhere near as over played as some of their other hits.

Reflections - Supremes 3.5 (Motown goes psychedelic; world survives) I hadn't known that about Eight Miles High being influenced by Coltrane - that's interesting! I've actually seen Shambala spelled both ways on their singles and albums; possibly it depended on the pressing?

I like the song itself, but the psychedelic noises do seem out of place, like they were tacked on simply for effect.

I first taped it from the Comedy Channel back in the mid '90s, and got the DVD a couple of years ago. Mark and I used to make a point of watching it every July 4th. Very cool movie!

I met Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. at a signing at Tower Records in L.A. a couple of years ago; I believe they had just published their book. Both seemed very genuine and nice; it's wonderful that they have been married that many years. Same here about Can't Fight This Feeling. I didn't mind that it was a ballad, but it just seemed a little bit generic, especially compared to their '70s stuff.
