Our scale: 5.0 - A song you absolutely love, one of your absolute favorites 4.0 - While not quite top-tier, a song you enjoy a lot 3.0 - Not a favorite, but you basically like it 2.0 - A "meh" song, you could take it or leave it 1.0 - Yikes! Turn that song off! **************************************************** Pretty Ballerina - Left Banke 4.0 (beautiful musical arrangement, especially the piano) You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oates 4.15 Fire - Pointer Sisters 3.5 Red Rubber Ball - Cyrkle 3.25 The Night Owls - Little River Band 4.25 (this is probably in my top three LRB songs. Always liked it) With A Little Luck - Paul McCartney & Wings 4.75 Donna - Ritchie Valens 3.0 I Won't Hold You Back - Toto 2.5 (I like a lot of their IV album, but this is a little too bland, especially compared to their earlier stuff) Billy, Don't Be A Hero - Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods 3.75 Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye - Steam 3.0 (I liked this more at one time, but overplay has dulled its appeal somewhat. Still, not a bad song) Right Here Waiting - Richard Marx 1.0 Mighty Quinn - Manfred Mann 3.5 (another of the songs I remember from my earliest childhood; always had a soft spot for it) Nights on Broadway - Bee Gees 5.0 (I can never decide if this or Jive Talkin' is my favorite. Love 'em both!) She Works Hard for the Money - Donna Summer 4.0 For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield 4.0

Pretty Ballerina - Left Banke 3.0 (Never heard the song until now..) You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oates 4.5 (This reminds me of happy sunny mornings right before school let out for the summer......back in 1982, with my Lawman jeans and Chuck E. Cheese baseball shirt..) Fire - Pointer Sisters 2.0 Red Rubber Ball - Cyrkle 4.5 (Happy, bouncy, and very pop. I've always liked the Cyrkle and wished they had more songs than the few that became popular... What a nifty idea, comparing the sun to a red rubber ball. The Night Owls - Little River Band 4.5 (For some reason, this song reminds me of being very young and having a huge crush on a certain guy... I like the "dark" sound to the song.) With A Little Luck - Paul McCartney & Wings 4.8 (There is no end to what Paul can do...) Donna - Ritchie Valens 3.0 I Won't Hold You Back - Toto 3.0 Billy, Don't Be A Hero - Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods 3.0 Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye - Steam 3.0 (Reminds me of that old Nickelodean show---- Double Dare? Definitely liked it more before hearing it a million times over and over..) Right Here Waiting - Richard Marx 1.0 (Overplayed and 80s just don't mix..) Mighty Quinn - Manfred Mann 4.0 (I can't hear this song without singing along. A friend of mine made a mix tape for me back in high school with this song on it, so it brings back some wonderful memories of that particular year.) Nights on Broadway - Bee Gees 4.0 (The Bee Gees are a guilty love of mine. Great song!) She Works Hard for the Money - Donna Summer 1.0 For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield 3.5 (I can't hear this song without thinking of the Muppet Show.... Then again, I can't hear most songs without thinking of the Muppets. Hahaha.

Pretty Ballerina - Left Banke 3.9 Very pretty song! I remember that JP (I think that's who it was) posted on the history of The Left Banke and how a chance meeting in NYC between Michael Brown (Left Banke songwriter and keyboard player) and a pretty, young girl named Renee something or other led to him writing Walk Away Renee AND Pretty Ballerina. I don't know if he posted it here, on RL or ML even. I remember that it was a cool story. You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oates 3.0 These guys really never excited me that much. Fire - Pointer Sisters 3.0 Ditto Red Rubber Ball - Cyrkle 3.7 Good song. I like Turn Down Day (which you never hear any more) a little better. The Night Owls - Little River Band 4.0 Really good song. Fantastic instrumentals. With A Little Luck - Paul McCartney & Wings 3.8 Good song. Probably outside my top 10 by Paul though. Donna - Ritchie Valens 3.1 Loved it then; Still like it now, although my fave by him is Come On Let's Go. I Won't Hold You Back - Toto 2.6 This song had potential. But it is so draggy... and the lyrics seem to be written just to make rhymes. It would score lower if not for that great guitar riff. Billy, Don't Be A Hero - Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods 2.6 I actually prefer the Paper Lace Version which did not do nearly as well. The song is cheesy though. I much prefer Bo's "Who Do You Think You Are" which is one of my favorite songs. Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye - Steam 3.9 I can't say that this is overplayed. As a hit single, it seems it is never played these days. I only hear it at a sporting event - and then, it's done as a sendoff to a vanquished visiting team. Can't say that I mind that either. Right Here Waiting - Richard Marx 2.0 Not my fave by him by a long shot. Mighty Quinn - Manfred Mann 3.0 Catchy, but what is it about? I haven't a clue. Nights on Broadway - Bee Gees 4.4 Top 500. One of my favorite disco style songs. The bridge is eerily fantastic. She Works Hard for the Money - Donna Summer 2.0 Gak! For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield 3.2 Not bad. But who decided that this rather bland song would become the only crossover pop hit they ever had.

Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye - Steam 3.0 It's a great song, but when it can be heard in stadiums & arenas everywhere, yeah, it's old now. Still listen to it, without cheers & jeers of fans.

I did learn something interesting, though - Michael Brown played the song on the TV special Inside Pop, the same one where Brian Wilson played Surf's Up at the piano! Would love to find a copy of that show. Agree about the synths in With A Little Luck - just right for the song without being overpowering.

I had a few myself, including one that had a transfer of my junior high school name and mascot. I think I still have that shirt somewhere. I agree about Right Here Waiting. I got so tired of that song - it seemed like it was everywhere!

It is a cool story, I agree. I heard the Paper Lace version of Billy Don't Be A Hero for the first time a couple of years ago. It's strange that there was such a difference in popularity between the two, as they sound similar. I did a blog post on Who Do You Think You Are awhile back - another good song.

You're right about Toto. Their '78-'79 stuff was really good, but I Won't Hold You Back just sounds too generic. It's really cool how well many of the '60s songs have stood up over time, and how they appeal across generations. I've heard that a lot of teens nowadays are turning to groups like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin instead of newer music.
