"Flashback" - Local Top 30 chart April 1983

The other night I was going through a large collection of newspaper clippings I've collected over the years of various articles about the Beatles.

On the opposite side of one article is a "Top 30" playlist dated, April 17, 1983, from one of my local AM radio stations - 1410 CFUN. For many years, the station was hugely popular, signing on the air in 1922, and adopting a top 40 format in 1960.

Unfortunately like many others, it went through a format change a few years back, and is now a talk radio station.

Here is the list:

Well, I see there were a FEW good songs in the early '80s. Actually there are several on this chart that I like, starting with #1. I think Billie Jean was one of Mr. Pervert's shining musical moments. This is a super song on all levels. (Of course, the idea of Jacko being accused of impregnating a woman by "normal" means is laughable.) Others I like on the list include Jeopardy, Cuts Like A Knife, I've Got a Rock N Roll Heart, and Shame on The Moon.

It's really become too bad that there is not a lot of "real" top 40 radio anymore. Just talk radio, five-song playlist oldies stations, and "urban" stations (aka C-Rap/Hippety Hop).

Boy, does this chart take me back! I was a freshman in high school at the time, and remember many of these songs vividly.

I absolutely loved Billie Jean and Beat It, and literally wore out my Thriller cassette from playing it so often. It's been awhile since I've heard Whirley Girl and Welcome to Heartlight, but I remember hearing them often back in the day. Swingin' was hugely popular in the area of VA I lived in at the time - and a friend's boyfriend could do a dead-on impersonation of John Anderson, complete with twang and all. I don't think Secret Information is on the Chilliwack compilation I have, but I'd be interested in hearing it, as I like pretty much everything I've heard of theirs.

The memories came flooding back for me as well, as I started to read through the list. A large number of these made their way onto various mix tapes I made at the time!

Secret Information is not included on the compilation that I have either, maybe we have the same one?

Yes I agree, the quality of radio these days, has really declined. The only songs on the list I don't recognize are those by Barry Manilow, Christopher Cross, and Dionne Warwick.

I remember Dire Straits "Twisting by the Pool"- quite a surprise for then to do.

Really like "Do You Want to Hurt Me"- only thing by Culture Club that I do like. But these days he sings "I Really Do Want to Hurt You".
