On Sat. June 13, Three Dog Night played a free concert at the Hatch Shell in Boston. I attended the show my friends Pete, Lance, Sandi and Dennis. It was a lovely evening for a show clear and cool. Three Dog Night were superstars in the early 70's scoring 10 top 10 hits and nine consecutive gold albums! Danny Hutton and Cory Wells are still with the group. Chuck Negron was fired in the mid 1980's for his crippling drug addiction and drama that came with it. Hutton and Wells still have their vocal chops and band was pretty tight! I have only two minor complaints. First, no time was dedicated to whom was in the band. Granted, some fans could tell you the lineup since the bands inception. But it would be helpful to know what vocalist replaced Chuck Negron. Second, the band decided to make themselves contemporary by adding a "rap verse" to their first number one "Mama Told Me Not To Come." Whether they were trying to win over new fans or tried to be funny, folks weren't having one the bands staples modified in any way. In addition to the groups big hits, they also treated fans to obscure album cuts such as "Is It Me" and "You Can Leave Your Hat On", a Randy Newman composition which would later be made popular by Joe Cocker. The group performed "Life of Blues" which was originally performed on a festival with Buddy Guy. Cory Wells delivered a great vocal performance for the thousands at the Hatch Shell. Personal favorites include "Liar", "One" and the encore "Joy To The World". The only major hits left out of the set were Laura Nyro's "Eli's Coming" and "The Show Must Go On" penned by Leo Sayer. It was so great to see a band deliver at a such a strong level after 40 years in the business!

Sounds like a great show! I saw them in 1991, and Chuck Negron with his band a few years ago, but would like to catch them again. It's cool that they added some of the lesser-known cuts to the set list.

3DN is one of my favorite groups, Dave. I am jealous!
It would be nice if the three members could reunite for a concert, but from what I've read, they've tried under several different sets of rules and stipulations, and were never able to come to agreement.

I've read that too(in Negron's "Three Dog Nightmare"). There's supposedly an updated version of that book available, but I haven't seen it.

Very cool Dave! There was a Three Dog Night concert (with Corey and Danny) that I saw a couple of years back on PBS. It apparently was filmed especially for Public Television and it was excellent, I was impressed. My brother saw TDN back around 1974 and I remember him telling me it was an amazing concert. Speaking of Chuck Negron, I saw his appearance on Geraldo Rivera's talk show back when he was promoting "Three Dog Nightmare" and it was an excellent interview. Chuck went through some devastating times due to his drug addiction, I really want to read the book. I too have heard that there is still alot of bad feelings between the three of them so a reunion isn't gong to be happening anytime soon. I have the 2 CD collection - Celebrate (1965 - 1975) and I really enjoy it.

I've been looking for a copy of that book for ages, but it's a hard one to come across - the used copies seem to sell for $$$.

That Celebrate collection is excellent - nice mix of hits with some great album cuts.

I remember him telling me that they did two or three costume changes during the show and he said they did all the hits and that it is among the best shows he's ever been to. I remember him playing the 45's (which he still has) of "The Show Must Go On", and "An Old Fashioned Love Song" around the house when they were current.

Yes, we had a good time, Dave! I'm just sorry I got wrapped up in a "texting war".. GRRRR!
I think the song you are thinking of is "It Ain't Easy", not "Is It Me". I never liked the song personally, and would've preferred they do another hit instead. Of all the album cuts they could've picked, I was surprised they picked "It Ain't Easy". They also didn't do "Try A Little Tenderness", "Pieces Of April", or "Let Me Serenade You" (unless I was too busy arguing via text...) Also, the rap section of "Mama Told Me..." was just obnoxious. Luckily, I was off getting ice cream while they were doing it..
I have the book, didn't know it was updated or hard to find...

Negron's son was featured on "Intervention"--seems Chuck's lifestyle transferred over to his son, who went to jail for the addiction, as well as for the robberies he committed to fund his habit...just a sad, sad episode...

Hi Grem Wow, I had no idea, that's really sad. I'm familiar with the TV series I've seen a couple of episodes. It's hard to watch because the families are going through so much pain and heartache.

I also hadn't known Chuck's son had appeared on Intervention - I've seen some of the episodes, but not that particular one. Hopefully his recovery is continuing to go well.
