From the Byrds to the Yardbirds. This one is pretty easy. But I couldn't not include them. And if you notice, I went A to Z, to B and now to Y and I don't have the time today to review Yes's 768 compilations! First up is the 1967 release Greatest Hits. This is a good entry level collection containing their "big 5" top 20 hits (not to mention Happenings....), not to mention band favorites Still I'm Sad and Smokestack Lightening. Problem is they had later hits like Ten Little Indians and Ha Ha Said the Clown. Rhino put out a collection called Greatest Hits Volume 1, which would have been ok if they ever put out a sequel!! But not only does this not have later hits like Ten Little Indians, it doesn't even have Over Under!! But Rhino made up for that YEARS later by putting out Ultimate! 52 songs spread over 2 discs, including some Keith Relf solo stuff! Great booklet too. It's really hard to argue with this collection. (They actually left off one track that had been on Volume 1, but just borrow that from a friend or the library and burn it! LOL!) Basically, that's it! That's the one to own!

The Yardbirds - Woo Hoo! Greatest Hits -1967 - Yes, good entry level collection, now the only downside is, is that at least locally Yardbirds albums are really tough to come by and when they are found (in nice shape) are expensive - at the last record show in April, I saw a Canadian copy of "Over Under Sideways Down" on Capitol going for $200 that's a lot of bread! Best of '64 - '66 Volume 1 (Rhino) I could also never understand why a Volume 2 was never compiled. What's here is fantastic and essential listening but as with most domestic single disc Yardbirds collections it's incomplete. As you mentioned, Rhino sure did make up for it however, with the 2 disc "Ultimate! collection Over Under Sideways Down - A Comprehensive Collection '63 - ' 68 (Raven Records - Australian import) Adam, I just had to mention this single disc release. Back in 1990 I read a review about this CD in GOLDMINE magazine., after reading it I had to own a copy! A few weeks later I walked into my favorite Mom and Pop Vinyl / CD store and there it was, behind the counter!!!! The great guy who worked there ordered one for himself and one for the store, well I grabbed it! It's a terrific must own collection if you can find it. The discs only fault is that "Stroll On" is taken from vinyl, that it - 75 minutes of music. What's weird is that Raven reissued this disc in 2008 with the title change of "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" '64 ' - '68. They changed the song line up ever so slightly (You get 27 songs instead of 28). I'm not sure if a better source was used for "Stroll On" or not this time around. Either version is highly recommended if you can track them down. The Ultimate Collection - A terrific must own 2 disc blow out. Great song selection, awesome pictures, great liner notes, a fantastic well put together package. It includes "Jeff's Boogie" one of my all time favorite "'Birds" tunes.

I've got a couple of Yardbird compilations.
First one I got was Heart Full of Soul & Other Hits. I think this is a Rhino collection. Nine songs, kinda wimpy, but it had the signature songs.
Then I got a two disc compilation (used). One disc is Five Live Yardbirds, 2nd disc is Rave Up With the Yardbirds. This included a lot cool stuff. Went a little deeper.
Unfortunately, neither of these compilations included Over, Under, Sideways, Down. Eventually had to buy Roger the Engineer to get the song. Weird.

I have the '67 greatest hits on vinyl. I think I got it on one of those record club deals. You know -- choose any 6 LPs for 5 cents (plus 40 dollars shipping and handling in the fine print) and then promise to buy only 5 more records over the next year for list price $30 each plus another $20 each shipping and handling.
It is a good album and I play it once in a while even these days. I have Ha Ha Said the Clown on a 45. Always thought it was extremely un-Yardbird like. I guess I never bought anything else by them. They were gone from the scene pretty quickly.
I don't think I've ever heard 10 Little Indians. I assume it's not the same song that the Beach Boys did?

If not used, at least at a library.
