What a great tracklisting! I think I might make a copy of this myself.
What was on Volumes 1 & 2? I remember your mentioning the series before.
Dawn, these were done in 2006. I searched back to see what I had posted.
This was Volume 1:
Point and Click Volume 1
1. Powerful Stuff - The Fabulous Thunderbirds (4:51) 10/4/03
This came from Adam’s Insane list (#6412) Reading the old posts (not hard to find, just use the search function), it seemed that nobody really liked the song that much – including Adam. So I don’t know what induced me to download it. I didn’t know it at the time, but I like it now.
2. It's All In The Game - Cliff Richard (3:10) 12/18/05
From Pete’s Could have Been a Contender Series – Cliff Richard post. I checked out Cliff’ in my Whitburn, which refreshed my memory about him covering the Tommy Edwards hit. Not a great cover at all, but I figure someday it may go in a play it again CD.
3. The Other Guy - Little River Band (2:48) 12/16/04
A song that I liked quite a bit at one time and had forgotten about until Adam listed it at #1671, and I had to get a quick listen.
4. I Almost Lost My Mind - Ivory Joe Hunter (3:09) 7/16/02
I was listening to Ivory Joe’s “Since I Met You Baby” which (I think) followed this song. I realized I didn’t have this version, only (ugh) Pat Boone’s, so I downloaded it.
5. Ariel - Dean Friedman (4:16) 12/28/05
This one is thanks to Kathyb. She was asking for information on it, and I did a quick search and found the lyrics and realized they sounded familiar. So I downloaded the song. I do remember it now, and was happy to be “reacquainted’ with it.
6. Seven Spanish Angels - Ray Charles and Willie Nelson (3:54) 11/28/00
I had never heard this song. Back in the Napster heyday, I was downloading a bunch of obscure Roy Orbison songs and found this title attributed to Roy Orbison and Willie Nelson !! (That’s always been one of the problems of free downloads. You get what you pay for! ) I downloaded the song, realized that it had nothing to do with Roy, but liked the song.
7. Wishing You Were Here - Chicago (4:37) 7/6/05
One of the big ones on Adam’s Insane List (#3). I read my response to him where I said the song is “interesting rather than great” Listening to it now, I’m beginning to like it more – a lot more. I still say that despite being reported only as singing background the Beach Boys had a huge influence on this song.
8. Timothy - The Buoys (2:46) 9/14/02
Back on YL, someone had started a post about weird songs, and someone posted about this song. I actually have the album, and the YL post led me to make an electronic copy. (Has extra meaning today with all the recent mine incidents.)
9. Teardrops - Lee Andrews and the Hearts (2:24) 4/8/02
This one is sad. Two days before I put this on my hard drive, I had helped my old college buddy Willie, celebrate his 60th birthday. I remember aside from buying him a bottle of scotch, I gave him a “certificate” that said “You’re 60; pick out any 60 songs you like and I will burn them onto CDs for you” Willie thanked me and said it would take some thinking, but one that he knew for sure right off the top was this great old doo wop ballad “Teardrops”. Willie really loved ‘50s and ‘60s music and was extremely knowledgeable on the subject. So two days later, I made an electronic copy of my 45 of this song and waited for more input. As the months went by, I talked to Willie from time to time, and he’d say that he was “working on the list” and would give it to me when he had 60 songs. Well, he never gave me the list, and then in November of 2003, he had a stroke and passed away. So all I ever got was Teardrops. This one’s for Willie.
10. Jerk It Out - The Caesars (3:18) 3/27/05
This is a fairly recent song (2003, I think) that was used in 2005 in a commercial for some IT company, I believe. They were playing it excessively while I was home with pneumonia. It was driving me crazy, but it was very catchy as well. So, with nothing else to do (except cough and wheeze) I went on line, found out what the song was and downloaded it.
11. Yesterday When I Was Young - Roy Clark 3:22) 6/18/05
Just a song that I always liked a lot, and wanted an electronic copy to put on some cd some day. So I did.
12. Levon - Elton John (5:22) 2/12/05
One that came up both on Adam’s Insane list (#846) and Dawn’s Chart History list. I knew the song, but didn’t realize that I did, because back in the day, I thought Elton was singing “He Shall Be Reborn” (Well, it fit with “he named his son Jesus”) LOL! Another one that I’m liking more and more each time I hear it.
13. Please Mr. Sun - Tommy Edwards (2:19) 1/26/01
I honestly don’t remember why I downloaded this song back then. Maybe just because I could.
14. Elenore - The Turtles (2:33) 1/30/03
I had read that the Turtles had written this song as a joke. To avoid censorship, they wrote a squeaky clean song. (“Elenore, gee I think you’re swell”) So I started humming the song, so I made an electronic copy.
15. These Are the Days of Our Lives - Queen (4:15) 7/11/03
This is one that Railyn had posted on her What Are Words for Series back in ’03. I didn’t know the song at the time, but the lyrics were really beautiful, and I investigated. Wonderful song.
16. High On A Hill - The Marcels (3:00) 12/20/03
I was looking for the Scott English version of this song for a No One Else Remembers cd, and stumbled onto this version. Great ballad with none of the foolery that the Marcels put in their up-tempo doo wop songs.
17. Someday Soon - Journey (3:34) 5/28/05
Adam’s Insane list (#131). He suggested that I check it out. I did. Like it a lot. – and here it is.
18. The Wanderer - Dion (2:49) 1/26/04
I was looking for some other song (can’t even remember what) on one of the free download sites, and a file having the name of the song I was looking for was really The Wanderer. (Again you get what you pay for). So rather than delete it, I renamed the file and kept it.
19. Candida – (Tony Orlando and) Dawn (3:08) 8/17/02
I think this came out of a discussion I was having with my wife about this group, and “Knock Three Times” not being their first hit.
20. The Banana Boat Song - The Tarriers (3:01) 10/6/01
I was trying to find “Cindy, Oh Cindy” by Vince Martin and the Tarriers for one of my early CDs of the series that later became my top 250. This one (a pseudo cover of Harry Belafonte’s “Day-o”) popped up during my Napster search. Since I had sung this song at my Bar Mitzvah party in 1957, it had some nostalgia for me.
21. Stand By - Roman Holiday (2:49) 12/16/04
I actually downloaded this after reading about it in a “Do You Remember” post from Ken. Actually, Adam had suggested the song to Ken, and when I thanked Ken for the post, Adam said he wanted credit for it. So ... Hi, Adam! (Really like the song, BTW)
22. Pretty Ballerina - The Left Banke (2:38) 2/2/05
This one, I believe originates in a post that JP made on ML ( oops - my mistake. Joe posted it here on a Music History Post) concerning one member of the Left Banke and how he met a ballerina named Renee in New York City, and how his unrequited love for her led to the Left Banke’s two hits. Now I hope you don't have to ask me what the other hit is.
23. Three Stars - Tommy Dee (3:12) 2/17/01
Downloaded this after reading a news story about the anniversary of the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. Three Stars was a commemorative song from 1959.
24. Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day (2:35) 11/25/05
I had erroneously thought that this song had not made the top 20, and would be a candidate for that series. I found out it actually had made the top 20, so the file was an orphan with no place to go.
I couldn't Find Vol. 2 on a search, I'll have to go and scan the back cover of the cd for the play list because my on-line file of the back cover is corrupt.
