Chicago and Clapton were a bit too ambious for me on a busy day like today so CSNY it is!
The first collection is So Far. This suffers like ZZ Top's first collection does-released about halfway through the artist's career. So you have nothing off CSN and Daylight Again. Not too mention, it leaves off Carry On, Long Time Gone and Marrakesh Express! There's no excuse for those, especially the last one! (The one plus of this collection-at the time anyway-was the only LP where you could get Ohio and Find the Cost of Freedom.)
In the early 80's there was a collection called Replay which seemed to augment So Far since it contained Marrakesh, Carry On and Pre-Road Downs (pleasant surprise!), along with some of the popular CSN tracks (no Dark Star though). And from what I read, Stills cut up Carry On on here. (This was his baby, as evident by the inclusion of his solo tracks.)
The 90's brought their box set. Of course this would seem to solve the problems as they include the "second half" of their career, and this wasn't trying to supplement any other collection. But the best way this collection works is if you buy it already having the debut and Deja Vu. Thinking most people that love CSN(Y) enough to sink money into a box, they probably figured you'd have these anyway, so many of the tracks from those albums are outtakes and alternates here. So if you go in knowing that, it works well because then you also get the aforementioned non LP tracks (Ohio and Freedom), the regular versions of songs from CSN, Daylight Again and American Dream (although not the title track!), not to mention a slew of solo and various off-shoots tracks. (Completely countering my "you should have the first 2 albums" statement, I was bummed Pre-Road Downs, Everybody I Love You and Country Girl weren't on here. Also 49 Bye-Byes.)
Finally, there is the Greatest Hits from recent years. This one you have to go in knowing it's a CSN GH, not a CSNY GH. So they shy away from the Neil tracks (no Helpless and the above two mentioned Neil tracks from Deja), but leaving off Woodstock?? What was Rhino thinking?? I was a bit disappointed there was no You Don't Have to Cry and Pre-Road Downs but since these weren't hits and don't really get radio play, it's understandable. The big omission here is Dark Star. This collection ends at Daylight Again.
So I guess I'd have to say-buy the first two albums, and get the box set. At least that way you get Dark Star plus the great solo cuts.
Agree/disagree?
