And on we go!
Well first we have Greatest Hits which according to Wikipedia, this was the biggest selling album in the US as of January of this year. (I suppose recent events have sent Thriller over that. ) Of course this is a good representation of their biggest early hits. (Although Outlaw Man isn't on there, even though two songs from the same album-Tequila Sunrise and Desperado-are and they charted lower and didn't chart in the Hot 100 at all, respectively. That's just as well since the latter 2 get radio play today and I still don't know the former.)
Their second Greatest Hits picked up where the first one left off. Another good collection of their biggest stuff.
Thing is, so much of their non-singles still gets play today so these two are lacking songs like James Dean, Ol' 55, In the City and Those Shoes.
In 2001, there was a single disc collection (with a desert scene on the cover) that apparently was a budget line collection. Not bad for a one disc overview except for the odd exclusion of Doolin' Dalton in favor of Already Gone.
A year earlier, they put out a 4 disc set. This pretty much covers all the bases, although some songs (Ol' 55, Victim of Love, Those Shoes) are including only in live form on the 4th disc, the Millenium Concert. Not bad though, only a few rarities and it actually includes Outlaw Man!
In 2003, we hit paydirt with the 2 disc The Very Best of the Eagles/The Complete Greatest Hits. And it truly is that. (Ok, except for Outlaw Man!) This includes everything from the two original GH's, plus the great album tracks like Ol' 55, In the City, On the Border, etc. Not to mention Midnight Flyer and yes, Doolin' Dalton. This even includes the live Seven Bridges Road, 2 tracks from Hell Freezes Over and the then new Hole in the World. Other than missing Outlaw Man and Funky New Year (yes, this DOES contain Please Come Home For Christmas), what more could you want? Very thorough.
I did not include and 85 Best of and a 94 Very Best. They have both been since deleted and I was only able to obtain a set list on the 94 set. It has 8 songs from the first GH and 5 from the second.
