Yep, I skipped a couple letters so we can honor a favorite artist of the birthday girl!
I usually go off Wikipedia for a list of compilations but for whatever reason, they didn't list his. So I used Allmusic which is VERY exhaustive, including tons of budget discs, imports and discontinued discs.
The first one for Rick is probably the one most people are familiar with, 1989's Greatest Hits (with the multi-colored Rick's on the cover). At first glance, it's a pretty decent, albeit brief, collection. The biggest omission here is Souls. The other two omissions are a bit more understandable, especially since they are missing from most of the other collections! Speak to the Sky, Rick's early hit, and Bruce which was apparently put out without Rick's approval.
I don't usually do this, but I'm including a budget collection by Special Products. I'm doing this because I own it! LOL! This one DOES include Souls, but loses Bop Til You Drop, Celebrate Youth and, worst of all, Human Touch. (And yes of course, Speak and Bruce).
There is a Best of that I don't remember ever seeing before, and it seems to be one of the best choices of a domestic single disc collection. However, it does lack Bruce and Speak! LOL!
VH-1's Behind the Music has all the biggies and leaves off the same two, but doesn't go as indepth as that one.
There is a 2 disc Anthology called Written in Rock and this really is a career anthology as it DOES include Speak to the Sky! Alas, no Bruce!!
Playlist also includes Speak to the Sky, but drops Souls. And you know about Bruce....
Platinum and Gold not only leaves off Bruce, it also excludes Love Somebody. On top of that, it's a live rendition of Souls and a dance mix of Celebrate Youth! (See Ken's rule about original versions on compilations.) Wouldn't recommend this one.
Finally, if you know where to get imports, there is a two disc set from Australia (his home!) that FINALLY gets it right, including Speak to the Sky AND Bruce!!! But wait-they forgot Souls......
So I don't know what to say here.....I suppose you could search out that import if you want to spend that money and find the Special Products collection for Souls. But if you're gonna spend that much, you probably have the original stuff!
As far as a single disc set, that Best of looks good as it includes Souls.
And you........?
