Not that busy today, I can do this on time!
The first compilation was Mark, Don & Mel: 1969-1971. Released way too soon in their career, this is pretty much a summation of their "album rock" time period, before they became much more of a Top 40 act. The only tune on here that really gets play today is Closer to Home/I'm Your Captain.
Next was Grand Funk Hits. This could be seen as a sequel of sorts to the earlier collection, having all the hits released after 71.
In 1991, I was very happy to see that the Capital Collector's Series put out a collection for GFR. Although this didn't contain many of the songs on the earlier 2 album set, it hit all the important points from Closer to Home all the way to Bad Time.
The year 1999 saw the band reunite and record three new tracks which were included on the 3 disc set Thirty Years of Funk: 1969-1999. Obviously this is collection to get if you want more than the basic radio Funk. But buyer beware: Heartbreaker, Inside Looking Out, Footstompin' Music and Rock-n-Roll Soul are all live takes. This violates Ken's rule, but at least it wasn't any of their Top 10 biggies. (But still I'm sure it bothers those who want the originals.) Mean Mistreater is cut by almost a minute.
Three years ago, another single disc collection simply titled Greatest Hits showed up. It's essentially the same as Capital Collector's Series, minus two covers, Feelin' Alright and Gimmie Shelter. (Mean Mistreater is live and I can't remember if the one on Capital is or not! LOL!) Although covers, I know these are pretty popular within the band's cataloge.
I'd say if you just want a one disc essential set, the Captial Collectors is the way to go-IF you can find it. Not sure if it's in print or not! Otherwise, you'll have to settle for the 03 set without the Traffic and Stones covers.
And you?
