Earlier this week, a friend of mine invited me to go see "The Australian Pink Floyd Show". Having never even heard of them I had no clue what they did, other than they performed as a tribute or cover band to the original group. Going on by my friend saying that the band was amazing and a "great light show" was included, I didn't pass up going. So last night, I saw the band perform at the Dodge Center in Hartford Ct.
What I did not expect was that this group was not just a cover band playing Pink Floyd music....they were a group that recreated the whole Pink Floyd arena concert experience from the late 80's and 90's, complete with large screen with music accompanied animation, inflatable animals...mainly a Kangaroo in Tie Dye, and a huge wild boar with glowing eye...lazers, lights, smoke, and of course a band that played all the Floyd classics to absolute perfection! Like what I said about the ABBA tribute show I saw earlier this Summer...for the casual observer not knowing who was actually playing on stage, one would assume they were at a Pink Floyd concert....not a tribute band.
The show was a "greatest hits" package, showcasing the songs most people would recognize. And how they were presented was creative and humorous....the show opened with screen animation of a teenage tie-dye wearing Kangaroo in his bedroom going over to his old Hi-Fi stereo and pulling out a various Pink Floyd album and putting the record on the turntable. The logo on the album would then denote what few songs would be played. The first was "Dark Side of the Moon". After several songs from that album were played, the cartoon kangaroo would again pull out another album with a different logo...thus repeating the process. Towards the end, the character dropped a mix tape cassette into a walkman, leaving an element of suprise as to what was going to be played. Way too funny to watch....especially the part where the song on stage ended and the screen cued back to the cartoon character 'caught by suprise" laying back on his bed "smoking his stuff". (He quickly ditched his smoke and went over to his turntable.) Other Australian touches, were included, some screen sequences changed from England landscape to the Aussie outback, as well as the animated kangaroo reappearing on stage as a huge inflatable.
As for the rest, it was all what one would have seen at a Pink Floyd show. During "Another Brick in the Wall" marching hammers, diabolical teachers, and tormented students march across the screen, while during "Comfortably Numb", the story is acted out on stage complete with a TV and sofa. Tons of visuals here.
Now for the actual music.....the band was spot on accurate. The guitar solos were tremendous...leaving the 10,000 people in the audience cheering, and the backround vocals were breathtaking. Songs played....like I said, pretty much the "best of". "Time" "Wish You Were Here", "Comfortably Numb", "Learning To Fly", "Another Brick in the Wall", "Run Like Hell", "Pigs" and quite a few others.
To sum it up....$23.00 got us a show that left our jaws on the ground. In this day and age, these types of show are giving people to get a feel for what may never take place again. And from the attendance from this concert, as well as the earlier ABBAmania show, the music is standing the test of time.
If this group comes to your city, check them out....you will get a full concert experience for under $25.00!!!
