To my surprise, I've written two songs- one a Christmas novelty song in a oldtime barbershop style. And the other, a slightly risque (but safe for the radio!) pop song, in a 40s big band style.
I see various songwriting contests online, but you have to pay to enter, so they could be ripoffs. So, has anyone here tried a contest? And was it a good or bad experience?

I've never entered a contest, but I think it's great that you've written songs. It's something I've always admired in people who have done it, but unfortunately, I have no talent for it, at least none that I've discovered so far.
I too would be a bit wary of contests that ask for a fee. Are these sponsored by businesses? I'm guessing that contests run by music schools/colleges and/or music-related organizations would probably be a safer bet, but may be harder to come across.

Howdy Dawn! The attraction of the online contests is they claim to have the ear of music performers and producers. It'd be nice to try to get a song actually recorded and out there. The downside, of course, is that you can't tll if any of them are legit or not.
I'm now preparing to be admired... ;D
