Nelson and I listen to the Sirius radio a lot while we travel. I like to park it on First Wave, and he'll hear songs and then say "Gee - I remember their other song - I thought they were a one hit wonder but this song isn't bad".
Truth be told, a lot of "one hit wonders" had more than one song that was a "hit" (albeit a modest one - may not have cracked the top 40). Many times you'll hear it and say "OH. I remember that. Didn't realize it was them", and sometimes you'll just be exposed to something new.
I've given new life to a lot of tired one hit people. I got so sick of the one hit, but I'm now enjoying other stuff. In some cases, I remember the song from listening to the one station I could pull down crystal-clear where my parents lived (a college station), sometimes I heard them from friends who had an album by the person (something I could never do - my mom didn't believe in buying tapes or records unless they had lots of hits on them - she said it was a waste of money otherwise) and some I've just discovered recently.
As long as I can come up with one, I'll post one a week or every few days (every day and you just run out of stuff quick). Either you'll hear something you haven't heard in ages (because radio ignores "also ran" songs by one hit wonders) or you'll be exposed to something new, which is a good thing.
So #1: "I've Been In Love Before" by Cutting Crew
Yeah, everyone knows "I've Just Died In Your Arms Tonight" but how many people remember this highly neglected song? I never cared for "Died In Your Arms" but I love this song, despite it's slightly awkward lyrics in the chorus.
Enjoy, and discuss:
** there is a video for the song but it's rather meh, and besides, I much prefer this slightly longer version**

When MTV and VH1 played music videos! There are 2 videos for "Been in Love Before". (my computer right now isn't playing video, so I don't what you've got posted).
Yes, "Been in Love Before" is much better a song. I wouldn't say the chorus is awkward, but the chorus has a syncopated off-rhythm to it.
I think a "second-hit wonder" thread is a great idea!

Yes, "Been in Love Before" is much better a song. I wouldn't say the chorus is awkward, but the chorus has a syncopated off-rhythm to it. What I always found slightly awkward was the phrase "I've been in love before. The hardest part is when you're in it". I get what they're trying to say, but it's a little odd. I don't have a video up, per se. It's just film of someone's 45 playing. There is the radio edit, and the single edit, and I prefer the single edit - it's the one I'm used to.

This is a good feature topic, Railyn.
I remember "I've Been in Love Before" well, although I initially didn't realize it was by the same group as "Just Died", as that was right around the time I was losing interest in following the top 40 closely.
Of the two, I think "Love Before" has aged better - has more of a "timeless" quality.

I agree...this song is very good, and should have been the bigger hit. On the flipside, I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight is probably one of the worst songs of the 1980's that I've ever heard...never liked it much at all.

Railyn, Good choice of topic. Cutting Crew had three top 40 hits. "I've Been In Love Before" has some unusual lyrics, but a lovely melody. I also remember "One For the Mockingbird" which was more of a rocker and hit the lower register of the top 40. Two years later, Cutting Crew would try to hit the charts with their second album, but it flopped. However, I do remember a Boston station playing "Everything But My Pride", which I personally feel was their best song back in the Fall of 1989. Sadly, this ballad was never a hit. But I feel it should have been. I have only seen this song on an import of the band's greatest hits CD. I'm kicking myself, I haven't seen a copy since.

I only remember 2 of their songs - I'll have to check out the other one you mentioned. Maybe it will ring a bell (as is often the case).

I agree! Great topic, Railyn!
I remember "I've Been In Love Before". It's a pretty good song. "Died in Your Arms", however, could be a candidate for Worst Song Ever. Probably wouldn't make the list of ten worst songs, but I would venture to say that if I ever made and posted a DJ Dave List of all popular songs ever recorded, starting with my least favorite and moving smartly along to my favorite at the rate of 200 songs a day -- I would get to Died in Your Arms the first day. When it was popular I remember changing the line "It must have been something you said" to "It must have been something I ate" as in 'My stomach hurts; it must have been something I ate.'

That's a nice song!
"Died in Your Arms" is the only track I've heard, so it's great to get the chance to hear something else by the band.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who really did not like "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight". I normally love stuff that has layers and strings and synth, but it just sucks. And I was reading a book in 8th grade (when the song was popular) that was required reading for our advanced reading class once when I heard that song come on the radio. The book was "Alive". I can't hear the song without thinking of that, so it just makes a crappy song even crappier. I'll have to start thinking of what to post next week. I think I have a good candidate.
