Have you every been to any given concert and seen the artist(s) perform one of their songs....and that particular performance of it stood out as the "definitive" version of that song? In short....the performance simply blew you away to the point that hearing the studio or other live version would never do it justice?
I can think of a few
*Trans Siberian Orchestra, November 11, 2007 at Mohegan Sun CT: ....at the show I was at, they performed a tremendous guitar driven instrumental version of O'Come All Yee Faithful/O Holy Night medley to which during the "FAAAALLL On Your Knees" part of the song...the crowd was ROARING!!! The guitar player and violinist were on FIRE! The whole song was one mind blowing, ear burning guitar solo.....and it was great!!! To this day, that concert was the best I have ever been to, and that performance of the mentioned song simply cannot be topped even by the band itself.
*Billy Joel....March 27, 2005 at the Hartford Civic Center: His performance of "An Innocent Man" was on!!! Not only was he kicking out the high notes of the song, but the crowd was singing along as well...perfectly. Indeed a high point of the show.
*Van Halen....Aug 27th 1995 at the Dodge Center In Hartford:
The band did one of the most over the top rock version of "Dreams". Hagar was belting the lyrics and the rest of the band was on fire! Again the crowd singing the "That's What Dreams Are Made Of" parts helped. There is a clip of the same song on YOUTUBE from the Toronto show which was a few nights before the Hartford show. Watch and you will get the idea.
*Elton John....1994 tour with Billy Joel at Foxboro Stadium: He did a medley of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting/drum, precussion solo/Pinball Wizard that left the crowd in a frenzy. The precussion solo was wild...very wild.
Any thing you can add?
