I've been watching/listening to Music Choice's 70s channel this morning, and a few minutes ago, Donny Osmond's "Sweet And Innocent" came on. I did a little Googling, and found out that the song peaked in June of 1971, when Mr. Osmond was 13 years old. So if the girl in the song was "too young for me," how old could she have been? Nine?

I did a little Googling, and found out that the song peaked in June of 1971, when Mr. Osmond was 13 years old. So if the girl in the song was "too young for me," how old could she have been? Nine? I used to wonder about that myself, Smitty. It seemed a ridiculous song for a young kid like Donny to be singing back then. But, ya know, I bet most of the people buying the record were probably nine year old girls! So he was probably just playing to his audience. One thing you may not be aware of is that the song was a cover of a 1958 song by Roy Orbison that he recorded for RCA Victor during the fairly brief time he was with them between his stints with Sun and with Monument. Roy's version was far different. It was a distinct Adult Contemporary style, unusual for Roy, who had been a pure Rock and Roller for Sun, and later becaome more of a Rock/Balladeer for Monument. The two versions of Sweet and Innocent are so different, you can barely tell they are the same song.

I guess she coulda been 24. If he was really into cougars. Unlikely, MC. Donny is from Utah. The protocol is very different there. He more likely meant that the 9 year old girl was too OLD for him. As for the 24 year old, he would probably opt to trade her in for three 8-year olds! (Or four, if he could cut a deal.)

It woulda been called "I'm Henery the Eighth I Am".

I'm listening to Music Choice again, and they've just followed up the Osmonds' "One Bad Apple" with... Kenny Rogers' "Coward Of The County."
