Grand Island Part II

Went back to the slightly pretentious antique store at Grand Island, NE--last summer, we were there as we swung through Nebraska on our in-state vacation, and I bought a nice collection of records (though the one I did NOt buy--a Jack Scott single w/sleeve--was worth over $100)...so I dropped by once again while we were in town for state volleyball.

Of course, Jack was long gone, but I found the following...

Monkees--Pleasant Valley Sunday w/slleeve (the sleeve is worth $40)
Johnny Ace--Please Forgive Me
Spencer Davis Group--Gimme Some Lovin' (surprised that I didn't have this one)
Ritchie Valens--Donna/La Bamba (light blue label)
Larry Verne--Mr. Custer
Fleetwoods--Come Softly to Me (got this one, but this one is in GORGEOUS shape)
Lonnie Donegan--Rock Island Line
Larry Williams--Short Fat Fannie
Little Anthony and the Imperials--Tears on My Pillow
Shirelles--Baby it's You (another surprise that I didn't have this)
Mystics--Hushabye
Chipmunks--Chipmunk Song (a weakness of mine)
Mountain--Mississippi Queen
Casuals--Money
Roy Orbison--It's Over (I really don't have a whole lot of Roy...probably because no one wants to get rid of theirs)
Duane Eddy--Rebel Rouser (I have a LOT of Eddy, but not his biggest one, till now)
Ricky Nelson--Be-Bop Baby (red label, worht over $50 for reasons totally unclear)
Neil Sedaka--Breaking up is Hard to Do
Gary Lewis and the Playboys--Doin' the Flake (a premium giveaway for Kellog's Corn Flakes--the flip has "This Diamond Ring and "Little Miss Go-Go")
Audrey Williams (Hank's gold-digger wife, and mom of Hank Jr) Little Bocephus/Windows of the Past...i have NO clue about that one...I bought it thinking it was Hank, not Audrey...so much for the new glasses!

Well what did all that set you back? You got some nice stuff!

I don't remember the Doin the Flake promotion- do you know what year that was?

Was the Richie Valens record a re-issue? I didn't think those two songs were released together.

Anyway, you sure do find some neat stuff.

What was nice was that virtually all of the records are in pirstine shape...

The Gary Lewis Cornflakes EP dates back to 1965--it was a mail-order promotion apparently. I had never seen nor heard of it before, and I imagine putting "Diamond Ring" on the b-side was an attempt to lure more sales. It features a rather stark looking all black Liberty label.



Actually, Gary plays some decent surf music...was actually surprised that it was this decent...

The Ritchie Valens single is the real two-sided deal--though I have two different labels for it--the blue one and a green one , which Gold mine claims both are 1958 releases.

What neat (and also unfortunate) was that the store owner saw me going though the records, and asked, "How long are you in town? I have more at home that I can bring in!" Sadly, the family was in tow, and antique stores bore them to a remarkable level, so I wasn't able to check out his stash. But, it makes me want to come back in another year!

Great haul, Grem! I have that same double-sider Ritchie Valens record (light blue label also.) I think that Lonnie Donnegan song is a gem! People only know "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor," but IMO, "Rock Island Line" is the better song. I don;t think I'm familiar with "Please Forgive Me" (the only Johnny Ace song that comes to mind is "Pledging My Love") or the Casuals "Money" (is it a cover of the Barrett Strong Song?). The Casuals are the same group that did "So Tough" aren't they?

Good point about Roy. I have about 15 or 20 Roy singles, some with picture sleeves. I wouldn't part with them for anything.

I have one LP from Roy Orbison- the 1962 Monument label "Roy Orbison's Greatest Hits".

Some very nice finds!

I have a nice copy of Be Bop Baby, the only problem with it is that it's warped, it plays very well, though.
