1964: Newsmen learn that Indiana Governor Matthew Walsh has banned the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie," then sitting at Number Six on Billboard's Hot 100, for allegedly containing obscene lyrics. Claiming it makes his "ears tingle" to listen to it, Walsh requests that the Indiana Broadcasters Association ban the record from airplay on all radio stations in the state. For his part, the song's publisher, Max Firetag, offers $1000 to anyone who can prove that the song contains obscene lyrics. The FBI eventually gets involved, and after extensive study reports that the lyrics of this version of the song, originally recorded by Richard Berry and the Pharoahs, are so garbled as to be unintelligible. oldies.about.com/od/oldieshistory/a/february1.htm

I remember we'd sing the "obscene" lyrics at parties. The problem was that the obscene lyrics didn't make any sense. The words just seemed to fit the mumbled/garbled sounds that you were hearing. For instance: (shut your eyes and ears if your that sensitive) one of the supposed phrases was "if she's got a rag on, I'll go above" Now what the heck does THAT mean? Above what?

I remember reading an article quite a few years back about the "uproar" over "Louie Louie." It was the first time I had read about the FBI getting involved etc.
I know that over the years other songs have been banned (Eight Miles High, A Day in the Life, that 2 Live Crew album) etc
Now, however you don't seem to hear about song banning. The record companies just send "clean" versions of songs to radio if there is a lot of swearing included.

I can't move it here, but on youtube there's a video of Iggy Pop performing Louie Louie in Paris.
Singing it with all the dirty lyrics attributed to it.
