And, on a rainy Monday in Washington, here we go again. 230. (Last Night) I Didn’t Get To Sleep At All – The 5th Dimension (1972, #8). Very pretty tune, but it’s the lyrics here that got to me. How often have you been in that position where you lose sleep over someone? Being able to identify with a song is definitely a recipe for it becoming a fave, for me at least. This is a great club song. 229. You’ve Got a Friend – James Taylor (1971, #1). I like the Carole King version as well, but James kinda sounds like everybody’s buddy. It’s a very understated song, and maybe that’s why I like it so much. 228. My Pledge of Love – Joe Jeffries Group (1969, #14). This one came in out of left field. It’s got a great soul sound, but also something intangible. I don’t know why I love it but I do. (Hmm that’s nearly the title of a song). 227. How Can I Be Sure – The Young Rascals (1967, #4). The lover’s lament- or maybe the paranoiac’s lament. Beautiful song. Well orchestrated. Love the intro and the instrumental interlude as well. Maybe one can’t be sure in romance, but I AM sure that this is, IMO, the best ever from The Rascals. (BTW, strangely, in this and another song on the my top 250, the artists innocuously uses the line ‘How’s the weather’ for what seems like no more reason than a means to make a rhyme) 226. Keep On Loving You – REO Speedwagon (1981, #1) One of the best of the power ballad genre in my opinion. These guys are good at it, and this is their best. Great harmonies; powerful song. 225. Dreamy Eyes – Johnny Tillotson (1962, #35). A decent country ballad by a star of rock AND country. Makes my chart more for the memories than for anything else. 224. Itty Bitty Pieces – James Ray (1962, #41). This guy shouldda been a superstar. He had a way of singing the blues that was super. He had a somewhat bigger hit called “If You Gotta Make A Fool of Somebody” that was a bit more bluesey. But although I just love this one; not enough people did. (Another entry off my No One Else remembers list.) 223 What Kind of Love Is This – Joey Dee and the Starlighters (1962, #18). Not everything that Joey and his group did was about doing The Twist at the Peppermint Lounge. This is just a light happy song about falling crazily, dizzily in love. Real catchy tune and lyrics. ‘…well I feel like a man from outer space, I’m acting like a psycho case..’ 222 I Want You, I Need You I Love You – Elvis Presley (1956, #1) As I reviewed my chart, I realized that Elvis’ early songs are extremely well represented. This is the third one on the chart already. Another 1956 rock ballad. Again, it features that great Elvis style of using extra syllables. ‘… with all my-hy hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-heart..’ It represents yet another of the whole slew of Elvis songs that hit us in 1956 and 57. 221 (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want To be Right – Luther Ingram (1972, #3). Another great blues singer. We were seeing a wave of these kind of songs in the late ‘60s-early ‘70s that referred to illicit affairs – a subject that was more taboo earlier for anything other than mild high-school rivalries. This openly justifies an affair between a man and another man’s wife. – But it exhibits a ton of angst in so doing. And today, the ton of angst is used to sell Blimpies (I think) sub sandwiches. What a comedown for a great song.

230. (Last Night) I Didn’t Get To Sleep At All – The 5th Dimension (1972, #8). Excellent, one of their best ballads. Marilyn McCoo does a great job with the lead vocals.
229. You’ve Got a Friend – James Taylor (1971, #1). A timeless classic, and one of my favorites from James.
228. My Pledge of Love – Joe Jeffries Group (1969, #14). I first heard this on one of the oldies stations here back in '90 or '91, and liked it immediately. It's surprising that they didn't have more hits.
227. How Can I Be Sure – The Young Rascals (1967, #4). I love the instrumental arrangement on this as well. A fine song from one of my favorite 60s groups.
226. Keep On Loving You – REO Speedwagon (1981, #1) I remember hearing this lots back in the day, but it's never grown old. Great song.
225. Dreamy Eyes – Johnny Tillotson (1962, #35). Not familiar with this.
224. Itty Bitty Pieces – James Ray (1962, #41). Don't know it.
223 What Kind of Love Is This – Joey Dee and the Starlighters (1962, #18). I'm only familiar with Peppermint Twist, but this sounds like an interesting tune.
222 I Want You, I Need You I Love You – Elvis Presley (1956, #1) A good early cut from him, but very overlooked on the oldies stations for some reason.
221 (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want To be Right – Luther Ingram (1972, #3). I'm partial to Barbara Mandrell's cover, but this is nicely done also.

230-very pretty song and I actually can identify with the lyrics, having been in that situation once or twice
229-okay song but old James can get on my nerves sometimes...for some reason I don't find him very sincere
228-never having heard this one too often I don't really have much of an opinion here
227-this is my very favorite Young Rascals song...I love the beautiful melodies and that accordian gives it such a romantic impact
226-one of their best songs,I must agree
225-not too up on this one, sorry
224-I remember this one, too, and really like it
223-nice song, pleasant to hear from time to time
222-not high up on my list of Elvis favorites...it sounds a bit contrived to me
221-as much as I like Luther Ingram,I have never cared for this song...Barbara Mandrell's version either

230. Great one, Ed, probably my fave from them. 229. Very nice. Nice lyrics. 228. Never heard of it or him/them. 227. Love it! Again, probably my fave by them! 226. Their best ballad, unless you call Time For Me to Fly a ballad, than that gets the nod. 225. Don't know it. 224. Don't know it. 223. Great one!! In the category with What is Love as classics the oldies stations ignore these days. 222. My mom's favorite Elvis song. Great early ballad from the King. 221. YEESH!! This doesn't fit in here Ed! LOL! Sorry, I just don't like that 70s "sweet soul" sound.

How often have you been in that position where you lose sleep over someone? Being able to identify with a song is definitely a recipe for it becoming a fave, for me at least. This is a great club song. This is a nice 1. A lot of times when someone talks about not getting enough sleep, I either think of this song or "I couldn't sleep at all last night, doo-doo-doot doot..." 229. You’ve Got a Friend – James Taylor (1971, #1). I like the Carole King version as well, but James kinda sounds like everybody’s buddy. It’s a very understated song, and maybe that’s why I like it so much. This is also a nice 1. I've done a lot of piano accompanying for choirs, soloists, etc. and I played for someone once who sang this. 227. How Can I Be Sure – The Young Rascals (1967, #4). The lover’s lament- or maybe the paranoiac’s lament. Beautiful song. Well orchestrated. Love the intro and the instrumental interlude as well. (BTW, strangely, in this and another song on the my top 250, the artists innocuously uses the line ‘How’s the weather’ for what seems like no more reason than a means to make a rhyme) Daryl Braithwaite does a great version of this also. I have it on his "Afterglow" compilation (but it probably appeared on another album before that--I dunno which one). 226. Keep On Loving You – REO Speedwagon (1981, #1) One of the best of the power ballad genre in my opinion. These guys are good at it, and this is their best. Great harmonies; powerful song. Nice song, if a bit overplayed.

230 - Last Night (I Didn't Get To Sleep At All) - A really fine song:) 229 - You've Got A Friend - Definitely among my faves of the early 70's. 228 - My Pledge Of Love - Found out about this song back at YL and shortly thereafter added it to a CD compilation. 227 - How Can I Be Sure - I love this so much and played it constantly when I bought the Time / Peace - Greatest Hits on cassette back in the 80's. 226 - Keep On Loving You - Just great! 225 - Dreamy Eyes - Not familiar 224 - Itty Bitty Pieces - I'm familiar with If You Gotta.... from the cover by Freddie and The Dreamers but I have never heard any of the original songs. 223 - What Kind Of Love is This - Not familiar. 222 - I Want You , I Need You , I Love You - A terrific track - awesome. 221- (If Loving You is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right - Excelllent

Didn't get to sleep--nice one--unlike their other biggies, don't have this on CD yet.
You've got a friend--Just wonderful.
My pledge of love--HUGE upstate NY hit (The act's from Buffalo/Rochester). Still lots of play here, anywhere else today? Great song that should go up BIG on my next CRAZYlist (about 4000 to the top 1000).
How can I be sure--One of the Rascals' best!
Keep on loving you--In your big list, in my top 1000. Sat's Top 1000, I don't remember, but I'm guessing not.
Dreamy eyes. Itty bitty pieces & What kind of love--I never hear these enough.
I want you...--his most forgotten #1 song--not EVEN on #1! On 2nd to None, I believe. Great.
If loving you is wrong--Great soul love tune.

230. I'm not familiar with this.
229. I like Carole King's version better. Don't know why.
228 - 227. Also don't know these.
226. Great, although I'm more partial to Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore, if you remember my comments from the INSANE list.
225 - 222. Wow. Don't know these either.
221. I've always thought of this song as being a little goofy. I guess because of the way it is misused in television shows, and using your example, Blimpies commercials.

The oldies stations pick a few (Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock) and almost totally ignore all the others which were as big, or nearly so (I Want You..., Too Much, All Shook Up, and to a lesser extent, Love Me Tender) 221 Don't think I know Barbara's cover, but I can see how a country "take" would work for this song as well as a soul take.

We probably have all been in that situation a few times. 229. Ya'know, Tracy, even though I love this particular JT song, I agree with you that he can get quite annoying. There are many of his songs in which he definitely grates on me.

Sorry, I just don't like that 70s "sweet soul" sound. 223. I've never been able to figure out how the Oldies stations pick their playlists. You would think with literally thousands of songs, HIT songs, to choose from, they'd utilize a much bigger playlist. -- And then they use that 'Lost Oldie of the Day' ploy. Hey! It's only 'lost' because they ignore it! 221. Aw wassamatta, Adam? Don't you like Blimpies?

230. This is a nice 1. A lot of times when someone talks about not getting enough sleep, I either think of this song or "I couldn't sleep at all last night, doo-doo-doot doot..." I think the Bobby Lewis song would TEND to keep you up all night.

That's a great album, Ken. I'm going to have to pull my copy out; I haven't played it in a while. 224. I can't imagine If You Gotta... being covered by Freddie. It just doesn't seem like his kind of song.
