Couple of good ones.
10. Best one on here, even beating the particular Chicago song on here. Love Bread's big hits.
9. Actually don't know this one.
8. All the Carpenters hits are nice, I like em.
7. Annoying. Just annoying. A buddy of mine and I always say we are waiting for the Mungo Jerry box set to come out!
6. A classic, but for an old Chicago pro like myself, overplayed.
5. Don't know it.
4. Kinda sad, isn't it?
3. A side is good, if overplayed, and do know to this day, I STILL don't know how the B side goes.
2. Tired of it, big time.
1. Actually not too bad.

8. My favorite Carpenters tune. As always, Karen's voice is superb. Beautiful.
7. I actually like this one, although it does get annoying after a while.
2. Two thumbs up.
1. I prefer the Gaye/Terrell version, but Di's is pretty good too.

Hi Dawn - Bubblegum, easy listening, R&B, protest song, three debut records, & a one hit wonder, great chart.
10. Make it With You - Great debut song from Bread
9. Candida - One of the few songs from T. Orlando & Dawn I like
8. Close to You - One of the best from Karen & Richard
7. In the Summertime - Another great "summer" song
6. 25 or 6 to 4 - A favorite from Chicago
5. Julie, Do You Love Me - Classic bubblegum
4. Patches - ok song
3. Lookin' Out My Back Door/Long as I Can See the Light - Two classics from CCR 2. War - Great song, still with meaning today.
1. Ain't No Mountain High Enough - One of the better songs from Diana's solo career.

Aw shoot. I hope to see this feature return someday soon. I've enjoyed it, thanks Dawn 10. Make It With You - Bread Some of the best soft rock around. This song is a winner. 9. Candida - Dawn Not too shabby. I've heard worse. 8. (They Long to Be) Close to You - Carpenters Another great ballad. This might be their best. The harmonies are exceptional. 7. In the Summertime - Mungo Jerry Good clean fun (except for the encouragement to drink and drive). Silly sing along warm-weather song. 6. 25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago Great stuff. The horn section really shines here. Fine guitar and bass as well. One of the few Cetera vocals I can stomach. 5. Julie, Do Ya Love Me - Bobby Sherman Teenybopper garbage. This is an awful song! 4. Patches - Clarence Carter Pretty good. Don't ever hear it even on oldies stations. Thought his 80's single "Strokin" was hilarious! 3. Lookin' Out My Back Door/Long As I Can See the Light - Creedence Clearwater Revival The string of CCR hits continues. They were on FIRE in 1970. This one is mediocre. 2. War - Edwin Starr Powerful vocals, explosive instrumentation, a classic. 1. Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Diana Ross I'd rather hear Marvin and Tammy sing it. Still, pretty good if overly melodramatic.

Hey Dawn! This has been a great series. I hope you're able to bring it back again some day.
10. Make It With You - Bread David Gates put together a great string of hits in the early '70s. This led them off. Fine song.
9. Candida - Dawn Didn't even know it was Tony Orlando singing when I first heard it. They got more acclaim from some of their later hits, but this is my personal fave by them.
8. (They Long to Be) Close to You - Carpenters Great vocals on this.
7. In the Summertime - Mungo Jerry - OK, but the skiffle group sound is not my fave.
6. 25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago - Typical, good, early Chicago.
5. Julie, Do Ya Love Me - Bobby Sherman - Not a great song by far. Bobby did not have the greatest of voices. But the song has a special place in my heart, for the memories.
4. Patches - Clarence Carter Good tune, but overly melodramatic lyrics. I always wait for Clarence to add a line like "...and then a wild animal broke into the house and ate my brother..."
3. Lookin' Out My Back Door/Long As I Can See the Light - Creedence Clearwater Revival -- Typical CCR. I like both sides. (How many people ever tried to rhyme with Illinois?)
2. War - Edwin Starr - A classic! (RIP, Edwin)
1. Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Diana Ross - Interesting interpretation, but doesn't come close to Marvin and Tammi.

Probably my all-time favorite year for music! Make It With You--Fine ballad. Candida--Great tune, but isn't "candida" a fungus? Close To You--Carpenters classic, great harmonies. In The Summertime--Annoying, but catchy 25 Or 6 To 4--OH YEAH! My absolute favorite song of all time. Blazing horns, a kick-a$$ guitar solo(which in my mind is worth the price of admission by itself), and soaring vocals--this one has it all. Julie, Do Ya Love Me--In a word, NO! Pass the insulin... Patches--As maudlin and overdramatic as the lyrics are, I'll still take this one over the other "Patches," where the guy falls in love with the girl from Shantytown, his folks nix the wedding, she drowns herself, and he prepares to join her. Lookin' Out My Back Door/Long As I Can See The Light--Two great songs from my second-favorite band! War--Protest classic which I like, but don't let my husband hear this one or he'll launch into a 10-minute rant about how the war protesters were a bunch of dope-smoking cowards who were afraid to fight for what they believed in... (PS: I didn't know Edwin Starr passed away ) Ain't No Mountain High Enough--Okay, but prefer Marvin & Tammi.

Well, I'm sorry to see it go, but I understand. It's hard, especially if you have other commitments. After all, we do have a life outside of here.
10) Ew. My mom used to listen to this. No thanks. 9) It's not too bad. 8) No thanks. Too many weddings. 7) Eh. It's a bit repetetive. 6) Not too bad. Early Chicago. 5) Not familiar with the song. 4) I always liked this one - don't know why.... 3) I know the first one, but not the second one. 2) It makes me think of Seinfeld. 1) I prefer Marvin's verson - less diva-ish.

I agree with you about Bread’s song being the best one on this list! I’ve loved it ever since I was a kid. A question – which Bread compilation do you have? I’ve been looking at the Rhino Best Of and the Anthology, and they both look good, although they each have a few songs that the other doesn’t. I’ve heard ‘Long As I Can See the Light’ only a few times, but it’s pretty good – a little more mellow than most of their other hits. It’s strange how some of their songs get played to death on oldies radio, while others like this one are seldom if ever heard.

I think I prefer Marvin and Tammi’s version of ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ also, but like you, I think Diana’s version is nice as well.

I don’t think any other artist could have performed it as well as Karen and Richard did. ’25 or 6 to 4’ is a great one from Chicago – love those horns. ‘Julie, Do Ya Love Me’ took a while to grow on me, I remember. It’s still not one of my favorite bubblegum songs, but it’s nice to listen to every so often.

Just about everything I’ve heard of theirs is absolutely top-notch. Those harmonies on ‘Close To You’ are beautiful, aren’t they? Their voices sound so great together. ‘Strokin’ – I remember that one! It’s been a long time since I’ve heard it, though.

Thanks for the kind words - I’ve enjoyed it a lot too. ‘Candida’ does seem to be one of the more overlooked of the Tony Orlando & Dawn hits. I like it a lot, though – the tune is catchy, and Telma and Joyce’s vocals are especially good on it. LOL about ‘Patches’! It’s a good song, but those lyrics are definitely depressing. About ‘Lookin’ Out My Back Door’ - I imagine not too many people have done that! I remember reading a “Mr. Music” column in the newspaper about 6 years ago about the lyrics of that song. There are some interesting lines in it.

It’s been great to read your replies. ‘Make It With You’ is one of the songs that I remember hearing when I was very young also, and still brings back a lot of memories. Love it! I didn’t pick up on that line in ‘In the Summertime’ about drinking and driving for quite a while either! ‘Lookin’ Out My Back Door’ is a fun one to sing along with, I agree. Another one that I remember well from my childhood days.
