I found this series of videos on YouTube. They feature excerpts of songs that missed making the top 40 for some reason, but had the potential to be bigger hits. Here is the 1979 video, with some interesting facts about the songs and artists:
I absolutely love Call Out My Name. Would love to find some of Zwol's other music.
I've seen Cuba included on a couple of disco compilations. Interesting mix of styles.
Mistrusted Love is a great track! I wonder what the rest of that album sounds like. It's strange that it didn't do better on the charts at the time.
No Time to Lose reminds me a bit of the Little River Band. Another really cool track.
Since You've Been Gone is one of those songs that sounds more recent than it actually is. To me, it sounds more like a song from 1982 or '83 than 1979, especially with the production.
Stay the Night was included on one of the K-Tel albums of the time - Circuit Breaker, I believe. I like that Westcoast style - they sound similar to Pablo Cruise.
You and Me is another good one that should have been much bigger than it was.
What are your thoughts on these?

I know Rainbow's cover of "Since You've Been Gone". I never knew it was a cover!

A lot of the songs are pleasant but unmemorable- I can see that they didn't do well with all the other songs out there.
I like "Call Out my Name". And I think "You and Me" by Liner, but I need to hear more of it.
Nancy Brooks, "I'm Not Gonna Cry Anymore" had a very good voice and a good song, but it was marred by bland musical backup. Would've done better with a minimalist blues backing.
"Mistrusted Love". Dave Walker of Fleetwood Mac? never heard of him in the band.
I was in grad school in Boston in the late 70s, and once Poussette-Dart played a free concert in the university quad. They were really big in Boston.
The only one I'd heard of before was "No Time to Lose". Played a lot on the radio then, at least where I was.

Dawn,
I like the "Mirror Moves" (I hope I have the title right) and "Mistrusted Love". I never knew "Since You've Been Gone" had been by someone else. I always thought Rainbow first did the tune. "Stay the Night" can be found on the K-Tel album "High Energy", which I still own!

I know Rainbow's cover of "Since You've Been Gone". I never knew it was a cover! According to allmusic.com, James Brown and Head East both did versions of the song as well. I haven't heard either of those, but am curious about them.

Here's the full clip of You and Me: I think you hit the nail on the head about the Nancy Brooks song. She did have a great voice, but the backing track is just kind of "there," and doesn't add much to the song.

You're right about High Energy, Dave - I knew it was on one of those circa '78-'79 K-Tels, but had the wrong one in mind. They'd often put one or two songs on a compilation that didn't quite make top 40. Some of their choices weren't great, but others, like Stay the Night, were very good.

I'm very familiar with the band Brutus, I have their hit from 1976 "Oh Mama Mama" included on the Ktel album Blockbuster. I had no idea that singer Walter Zwol embarked on a solo career.
The Rockets' Can't Sleep is pretty good, but I like their cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" more.
Bandit - One Way Love - I really like this, I have the album, and it is very, very good!
I also had no idea that the Currie Sisters recorded "Since You've Been Gone." I knew at the time they had released an album, but had never heard it.
No Time To Lose - Fantastic song, I seem to recall Adam mentioning it, because I have the song on a mix CD I made.
The Fabulous Poodles - I'm vaguely familiar with the name so it's great to finally get to hear a track of their's.
Mistrusted Love - Mistress - Very good, I like this one! As far as Dave Walker is concerned, , there was a Dave Walker included in a lineup of Savoy Brown, but I don't recall him (if it's the same person) ever being in any lineup of Fleetwood Mac.

Live and learn: I got curious about this Dave Walker/Fleetwood Mac thing. According to wikipedia, Walker (yes, the one of Savoy Brown) was in Mac for part of 1973, contributed two vocal tracks to the "Penguin" LP.

Hey MC Thanks for the info, I also did some research on allmusic.com, and discovered that Dave was in fact a member, but I couldn't find out what albums he played on, so once again, thanks!

The only song I recognized was the Gibson Brothers' Cuba. I was stationed in England when it peaked at #12 on the UK Top 40 Chart in Feb 1980.
I do know Rainbow's version of Since You've Been Gone (got it on vinyl). I always thought their version was first, but maybe not.
The Dave Walker song sounded interesting & I didn't know he had been part of Savoy Brown.
Anyway, cool post.

Ken, is Brutus' style similar to Call Out My Name? You're right, I remember Adam mentioning No Time to Lose as well - on the INSANE list, I think. I had just become familiar with the song not long before that.

I too didn't remember seeing any mention of Dave Walker in Fleetwood Mac before this video, but it's cool to know how he fits in.

It's amazing how different the U.S. and UK charts were at any given time. Thanks Woody!
