Kansas - One of those groups that you hear all the time, and even though they're not bad, you're not exactly going nuts over their music or concerts. Carry On Wayward Son?? A classic, but tired of hearing it.
KC & the Sunshine Band - Total disco, totally great!! Who doesn't love this stuff? Give me a break, even the most hardcore rocker knows how to do a little dance, make a little love, and GET DOWN TONIGHT! ;D
Chaka Khan - I love her. Actually I don't know many of her songs, but everytime she's on tv I'm like "HEY!! It's Chaka!!" Great voice!
Greg Kihn - The Breakup Song is definitely my favorite - but I've always remembered him for the Jeopardy video.

Yup, I've seen it, but barely remember it. We didn't get MTV in the 80's (My town has always had the WORST cable company!! ), but there was briefly a UHF station called V66, which showed videos 24/7. Since it wasn't a cable station, I could only watch it on a small portable with rabbit-ears. So my V66 video memories are "Snowy, at best" I remember my buddy didn't have cable growing up (even though his parents coulda bought and sold mine), and he used to watch one of the local channels and I think he saw some of the rarer ones on there too!

I like them both - Manfred's arrangement is VERY different (heavier guitar , as well as that guitar / synth solo). Where Greg's is a more on the pop side . It's actually kind of cool to listen to both back to back. I had to ask, because MMEB's version is one of my all time fave songs!

I'm much more fond of today's artists!
Kansas: My former neighbors from Jonesboro, GA. Recorded some good straight edged rock and roll in the late 70's and early 80's. I remember Carry on Wayward Son being played over a movie trailer for a really bad John Travolta movie back in '77 (think it was Moment by Moment with Lily Tomlin). Too bad classic rock radio has forgotten that they have more than two songs in their archive. Favorites = Carry on Wayward Son, Dust in the Wind, Hold On, Point of Know Return
KC & the Sunshine Band: You'd better believe I like this group! My favorite of the disco genre. Their lyrics were ridiculously simple and repetitive but the MUSIC and the beat is what made this band so memorable. They really knew how to work a hook and a double entendre as well. Saw them perform about five years ago and they still kicked it. Favorites = Get Down Tonight, That's the Way I Like It, Shake Your Booty, Keep It Coming Love, I'm Your Boogie Man, Boogie Shoes, Please Don't Go, Do You Wanna Go Party
Chaka Khan: Soulful singer who was often backed by the group Rufus in the 1970's. I'm lukewarm about her. Not bad but not a favorite by any means. Favorites = Tell Me Something Good, Do You Love What You Feel, I Feel For You
Greg Kihn: Haven't heard much from him but I do enjoy his music. Once spent an entire afternoon listening to "The Breakup Song" over and over after the end of a long term romance. They don't write 'em like that anymore... Favorites = The Breakup Song, Jeopardy
Andy Kim: Haha, the main voice behind the Archies but I try not to hold that against him. Not much to say about him either. Favorites = Sugar Sugar, Rock Me Gently

Outstanding today!
Kansas-took some time, but I really got into them in the 80's. Own FIVE cassettes of theirs: Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, Monolith, Greatest Hits (1983), and Power. Nothing like that progressive feel-GREAT violin playing from Robby, and Steve's one of THE best vocalists! Oh, and can't forget Kerry's guitar! Actually based in Atlanta during most of their tenure. Should upgrade to CD's sometime. Faves: People of the south wind (WOO HOO!!!) Carry on wayward son Dust in the wind (One of the best ballads ever) Power Play the game tonight Hold on All I wanted Point of know return Reason to be Portrait (He knew) Fight fire with fire The wall Got to rock on Can't cry anymore
KC & the Sunshine Band-My fave today of these 5, forever and always. I grew up to their music, wanted to see KC in person for SOOOO long, and got my wish (complete with autographed picture) in 1999! And they came back to my State Fair for another 2 years! I can't say enough, period. Will NEVER be burnt out on any of their tunes. RIP, Jerome Smith. Faves (LONG list!): That's the way (uh huh, uh huh) I like it (Shake shake shake) Shake your booty I'm your boogie man (That's what I am!) Yes I'm ready (I count this, it's a duet of KC & Teri DeSario--absolutely LOVE it! At work one day, I CRANKED this in the dining room with no customers! That made my day!) Keep it comin' love (LOVED this on my 8th birthday!) Please don't go (Another of the best ballads ever) Give it up (Slammin'! One of my '84 faves!) Boogie shoes (Surprised this only hit #35, considering how much I heard it in '78) Get down tonight (If I HAD to pick my least fave of their 5 #1's, this is it. Hardly ever heard it in the 80's, suddenly from '94 on, TOO MUCH play!!!) Do you wanna go party I like to do it Sound your funky horn Shotgun shuffle (instrumental) It's the same old song (The ending's a bit long, though) Queen of clubs Rock your baby (instrumental remake of the George McCrae smash) I get lifted Wrap your arms around me Do you feel all right Who do ya love Funky '75 (another instrumental) What makes you happy Ooh, I like it Let it go Let's go party I'm so crazy 'bout you Hey J (yet another instrumental) Come on in
Chaka Khan-It's only right you do a group entry for Rufus, even though my most recent Whitburn books do lump the 2 together (not right, IMO). Chaka had a lot of power, especially solo, and sang ballads quite nicely too. Lots of game show appearances the last few years (Hollywood Squares, Millionaire, among others). Get dancin'! Faves: I feel for you (It's like in nearly EVERYONE'S top 1000!) I'm every woman (Nowadays I like this version more once again) Whatcha gonna do for me (LOVE it! Cover of an AWB tune) This is my night Own the night Love you all my lifetime Through the fire It's my party (remake of the Lesley Gore tune) Love of a lifetime (different song than above)
Greg Kihn-even he's a SOLID winner with me! LOVED "Jeopardy" from Day 1 (Yeah, radio played it a lot, too), as well as the other 2 top 40 hits--SOLID beat on 'em all! Man, has he changed the last 20 years! (Saw him on a VH1 "I love the 80's" special) Pure ear candy rock. Faves: Jeopardy Break up song Lucky (WOOO!! A winner of 2 rounds in my recent "80's Oblivion" battles) Happy man Love never fails The girl most likely Love & rock 'n roll Boys won't (leave the girls alone) Testify Reunited Remember (their first single release from '78) Sheila Every love song Rock
Andy Kim-Part of a bubblegum/soft rock wave of artists I love! Just my style. EVERYTHING I've heard is wonderful-feel good tunes! Must get a CD soon. Faves: Rock me gently (GREAT electric piano!) Be my baby (Everyone forgets THIS Ronettes tune-even better than the other remake!) Baby I love you (Don't get me wrong, this is great!) How'd we ever get this way Fire, baby, I'm on fire Shoot 'em up baby So good together Rainbow ride I wish I were A friend in the city
Congratulations, Sat. One of the best lineups ever. Check email! (I know you do anyway! ;D)

Kansas--Never listened to them a whole lot growing up, only know the hits, but what great songs they are! Children of the South Wind is probably my favorite by them, followed closely by Dust in the Wind, Hold On, and Wayward Son. KC and the Sunshine Band--Love this group! Had a lil crush on KC back in the day. What a cutie he was! Had the 45 of Keep it Comin' Love--cover was a picture sleeve, and I'd just kinda stare at his picture while the record was playing. LOL! Faves: Just about everything. Chaka Khan--Just saw her on VH-1's Diva special tonight. Among other things, she sang a duet of "Tell Me Something Good" with Stevie Wonder. She's still got the pipes. I've never been a huge fan, but most of her songs are definitely listenable. I wouldn't turn 'em off if they came on the radio. Greg Kihn--I thought his album titles were clever--playing on his last name. Having said that, I don't think I own any of them. LOL! Jeopardy and The Break-Up Song is about all I know by him. I like them both. Andy Kim--Really really like Rock Me Gently. Baby I Love You is great too. Lots of memories associated with both of those songs.

Funny you should mention that Kansas story. Last night on the Country awards, I was thinking how the name Alabama could never work for a rock band. I mean, there is no mistaking Boston as anything other than rock. But could you imagine Alabama as a rock group name? Your right. The name Alabama would never strike me as a rock band. But part of the reason I really like the group Alabama (I own several albums & their greatest hits CD) is it seemed they always had just a little bit of rock mixed in their country music. At least it seemed that way to me. If I had to pick a favorite country act, it could well be Alabama.

Greg Kihn.... So HE was the one who sang about our love being in Jeopardy? Now now I know where Weird Al got the melody for tellings us he LOST ON JEOPARDY! When I hear the name Greg Kihn I remember somebody who covered that Jim Reeves song "He'll have to go". It made me groan because that song BELONGED to Jim Reeves. All I can say is... Glad I don't have cable or an sat. dish!
Kansas.... The only of theirs I've ever heard is "Dust in the Wind", and my recording of it isn't even by them! It's by a girl named Teal who sang it in a talent show when we were back in high school!
K.C. and the Sunshine band... One of those groups you liked or, in my case tolerated, because your friends liked them. Let's just say the disco or near-disco pop music that came out of Central Europe is/was more my taste. Would rather hear "Daddy Cool" or "Ma Baker" by Boney M.
Chaka Khan? Chaka Who? Ah.... those Rufus records I kept avoding when hitting the thrift stores!
Andy Kim.... Another guy who didn't make me reach for the tuning up or the stop button!

Kansas- Just know their bigger hits. I like both Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind.I think they sound more pop than rock.
KC and the Sunshine Band- I'm probably the only person in the world (well, at least at MC) who doesn't like this group. Their music is more like rap than like rock, IMO. I love rock, but it has to be melodic - more than just a beat. I'll admit its catchy, though. (I used to find myself muttering "That's The way uh-huh uh-huh" all the time when the songwas popular). Fave: for me, of course, it would be their only hit that doesn't fit to the general description -- Please Don't Go.
Chaka Khan- I love Tell Me Something Good. That's about it. As for I Feel For You, I prefer hearing Homer Simpson rap to it, like I heard the other day.
Greg Kihn- Jeopardy, which I give a C minus, is my fave.
Andy Kim- Didn't care for his bubblegum interpretations of Baby I Love You, and Be My Baby, but liked Rock Me Gently, How'd We Ever Get This Way, and Shoot Em Up. But I LOVE a rather obscure song of his, called "I Wish" - although he kinda blew it at the end of the song by reverting to that bubblegum sound.
