Your right. The name Alabama would never strike me as a rock band. But part of the reason I really like the group Alabama (I own several albums & their greatest hits CD) is it seemed they always had just a little bit of rock mixed in their country music. At least it seemed that way to me. If I had to pick a favorite country act, it could well be Alabama. I too like Alabama, and own that 2 disc set of their number 1's! And you are right, they certainly have a rock influence! That is why I like so much of the country stuff of today-definate rock influence!

Greg Kihn.... So HE was the one who sang about our love being in Jeopardy? Now now I know where Weird Al got the melody for tellings us he LOST ON JEOPARDY! When I hear the name Greg Kihn I remember somebody who covered that Jim Reeves song "He'll have to go". It made me groan because that song BELONGED to Jim Reeves. All I can say is... Glad I don't have cable or an sat. dish! Kansas.... The only of theirs I've ever heard is "Dust in the Wind", and my recording of it isn't even by them! It's by a girl named Teal who sang it in a talent show when we were back in high school! K.C. and the Sunshine band... One of those groups you liked or, in my case tolerated, because your friends liked them. Let's just say the disco or near-disco pop music that came out of Central Europe is/was more my taste. Would rather hear "Daddy Cool" or "Ma Baker" by Boney M. Chaka Khan? Chaka Who? Ah.... those Rufus records I kept avoding when hitting the thrift stores! Andy Kim.... Another guy who didn't make me reach for the tuning up or the stop button! Greg Kihn-LOL Yes, that was definitely a spoof of his song! So, you liked Andy or no?

Kansas- Just know their bigger hits. I like both Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind.I think they sound more pop than rock. KC and the Sunshine Band- I'm probably the only person in the world (well, at least at MC) who doesn't like this group. Their music is more like rap than like rock, IMO. I love rock, but it has to be melodic - more than just a beat. I'll admit its catchy, though. (I used to find myself muttering "That's The way uh-huh uh-huh" all the time when the songwas popular). Fave: for me, of course, it would be their only hit that doesn't fit to the general description -- Please Don't Go. Chaka Khan- I love Tell Me Something Good. That's about it. As for I Feel For You, I prefer hearing Homer Simpson rap to it, like I heard the other day. Greg Kihn- Jeopardy, which I give a C minus, is my fave. Andy Kim- Didn't care for his bubblegum interpretations of Baby I Love You, and Be My Baby, but liked Rock Me Gently, How'd We Ever Get This Way, and Shoot Em Up. But I LOVE a rather obscure song of his, called "I Wish" - although he kinda blew it at the end of the song by reverting to that bubblegum sound. Well, I wouldn't call KC rock either, but disco.

Kansas-I THINK their lead singer is (Or at least was for a while) a CCM artist. I still like "Carry On"--and "Point of No Return"... KC and the Sunshine Band: Just the kind of band ya can't help but dance too! (Lots of memories of roller skatin' days, too!) Chaka Khan-Well, I mainly think of her singing "Tell Me Something Good"--with Rufus--which, btw, I first heard--along with Takin' Care of Business" on that same trip to Houston as I heard "Hollywood Swingin"--but NOT at Astroworld (Remember? Andy Kim-(*Sigh*) My first boyfriend used to sing "Baby I Love You" to me ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) : I was 10, he was 13--or so I thought... A few years later we had ANOTHER summer romance (He lived in Penn, I lived near San Diego--and later he moved out near me) and THIS time I was 16---and HE was 16! (LOL!) I am ashamed to say that the last time I heard from him was when he had called me to tell me he had joined the Navy ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) (!!!) ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) so that we could "get married now" Honestly! I had just been KIDDING about getting married! I called his brother and cried to him to break up for me. I STILL feel on the terrible side about all that!( But still glad I was still available when my husband came along!) Ya...thanks for bringing all those wonderful memories back! ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

"Dust in the Wind" always makes me tear up and while I've always liked "Carry On Wayward Son," I can only hear it so many times before I have to say.. enough already! Faves: Dust in the Wind, Point of Know Return, People of the South Wind KC and the Sunshine Band - Love 'em, love 'em, love 'em. Faves: I'm Your Boogie Man, Please Don't Go, Get Down Tonight Chaka Khan - I Feel For You, Tell Me Something Good, I'm Every Woman (Whitney Houston's version doesn't even compare) Greg Kihn - A one-hit wonder here that I got a big kick out of. Yeah, MTV played the hell outta that video, which I thought was one of the strangest ones I'd ever seen - loved it! Faves: Jeopardy Andy Kim - A few years ago I picked up a CD with "Rock Me Gently" from Blockbuster's Summer Hits series (if I remember correctly). Faves: Rock Me Gently, Baby I Love You

Another older post I thought it might be cool to revisit. For those of you who have joined us more recently, this was a popular ongoing feature during late spring-summer of 2003. Here was my answer from 6 years ago: Kansas - One of my favorite mainstream rock groups of the late 70's-early 80's. Your description of them as being between prog and arena rock is right on the money, and they do justice to both genres. What troubles me about this band is that radio plays only 2 or 3 of their hits to death, while ignoring some of their finest work. Favorites: People of the South Wind (this would easily make my personal top 50 songs - love it!), Dust in the Wind, What's On My Mind, Point of Know Return, Play the Game Tonight. KC & the Sunshine Band - Love them! Harry Casey is a very gifted songwriter and performer who I think is somewhat overlooked these days. Everything I've ever heard of theirs is wonderful. Favorites: Keep It Comin' Love, That's the Way (I Like It), I'm Your Boogie Man, Shake Your Booty, Wrap Your Arms Around Me, Get Down Tonight. Chaka Khan - She has a wonderful voice, with great power. Her work with Rufus in the 70's and early 80's was outstanding. Favorites: I'm Every Woman, I Feel for You, At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up), Stay, Ain't Nobody, You Got the Love (last 4 with Rufus). Greg Kihn - I'm only familiar with 'The Breakup Song' and 'Jeopardy' and like both of those. I bought Kihnspiracy on cassette years ago for 'Jeopardy', and never got around to listening to the rest of it! Andy Kim - Not an artist I know much about beyond a few hits, but I absolutely love 'Rock Me Gently' - that song brings back a ton of childhood memories! Other favorites: Baby, I Love You, Fire, Baby I'm On Fire. And how I'd answer it today: Kansas - Still enjoy their music a lot. While a lot of other bands had that "arena rock" style at the time, probably none were as able to mix prog and rock so effectively and have as much mainstream appeal, except possibly Genesis in the late '70s - early '80s. Six years later, Carry On Wayward Son is still played to death on the radio. ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) Dust in the Wind gets a fair amount of play as well, but seems to have aged better. But People of the South Wind is still the hidden gem of their singles - why it isn't more popular is a mystery. It would still make a personal top 50 were I to make one. KC & the Sunshine Band - While I still enjoy their music, I don't listen to them that often these days. Not sure if it's a case of liking them less over time, or just liking other music/artists more - probably the latter. Ironically, Please Don't Go, which used to be a lesser favorite of mine because it was so different from the rest of their hits, has grown on me. Keep It Comin' Love remains my favorite. Chaka Khan - Very powerful singer. I Feel for You is one of those songs that instantly transports me back in time to the roller rink in 1984 where it was often played. The song of hers I hear the most these days is Through the Fire, which is good except for the end, when she struggles a bit with the higher notes and gets a bit shrill. The Rufus stuff is very good, yet hardly ever played these days apart from Tell Me Something Good occasionally. Greg Kihn - Well, 6 years later, I still haven't gotten around to listening to that Khinspiracy cassette! I don't hear Jeopardy much anymore, but when I do, I think I enjoy it more now that it isn't so overplayed. The Breakup Song is still an enjoyable listen. Andy Kim - Rock Me Gently is still a great slice of '70s pop. I've heard a few other songs of his since this thread, and have been generally impressed. Rainbow Ride is an interesting track that reminds me a bit of the Monkees.

Hey Adam:) Kansas - Perfect description ! my oldest brother really liked them , I remember he had (has) about 4 of their LP's . He played them alot in the house. I have that Best of on CD Faves . Play The Game Tonight , Dust In The Wind , Song for America , Point Of No Return , Fight Fire With Fire , Perfect Lover and Hold On. KC and The Sunshine Band - Yeah I like alot of Harry's or KC's:) tunes I had That 's The Way I Like It on 45 as a kid and on a Ktel LP as well as Get Down Tonight. Faves : Boogie Shoes , Keep it Comin' Love , Get Down Tonight and That's The Way I Like it. Chaka Khan - Not a Huge fan but I do remember hearing Tell Me Something Good back in the 70's - I like it and have it on That 70's Show "Jammin" CD compilation. Faves: Tell Me Something Good and I'm Every Woman . Greg Kihn - I really enjoyed The Break - Up Song and Jeopardy , Heard them lots at the time of their release. So I did some reading on his catalogue of material and bought Rhino's Best Of - Kihnsolidation in the early 90's. There are some really good songs - Including those above a few of my faves include: Someday , Reunited , For You ( a Springsteen cover) , Madison Avenue , Sorry and Anna Belle Lee Andy Kim - I LOVE his version of Baby I love You and yeah Rock Me Gently is good as well. I'm happy to report that nothing has changed since I posted this back in 2003! My opinion is still the same Kansas - I was playing Fight Fire With Fire in the car while doing some errands recently and it's still a fine sounding record! Chaka Khan - Still not a huge fan, but she's ok. Andy Kim - One of my local oldies stations plays Baby I Love You, Rock Me Gently, and How'd We Ever Get This Way which sounds very similar to Baby I Love You,. on a regular basis. Great bubblegum pop! KC and The Sunshine Band - I played Boogie Shoes about a week ago and enjoyed every minute of it. I didn't listen to a lot of disco in the 70's but I liked a few songs and this was one of them. Greg Kihn - On one of the mix CD's I made to play in my car awhile, back I included several of his songs from that Rhino best of, Anabelle Lee, Reunited and Madison Avenue He had many songs like those I listed above that were well crafted pop / rock songs.
