Thank you for all reading today!! MAJOR DAY here on the opinion post!!! Did you all guess why?? HERE WE GO!!!!! Martina McBride-Ok, here is where I take obnoxiousness to a WHOLE new level! LOL!! I have so much to say, that I don't know WHAT to say! I know I won't do her justice and you will all be like "So what's the big deal?" Anyway, Martina Schiff McBride was born July 29, 1966. At the age of 7, she was singing in public. (A recording of one song is available on her Evolution album!) She sang with her father's band The Schiffters. By the time she got in her late teens, she drifted to rock and roll (maybe why I like her music??) and was covering the likes of Pat Benatar and Heart at bars. She lists those two and Linda Ronstadt among her rock influences. (BTW, one of her first concerts was Ozzy! ) Anyway, she eventually drifted back to country and put out her first album in 92. It did not do that well. Singles stalled before reaching the top 20. Incidentally, old time country fans would probably like that first album best, it is the most "TRUE" country sounding album. Her breakthrough came in 93 with the The Way That I Am album and a little song called Independence Day. Critics and colleagues praised her for taking a risk with such a controversial song. It has become her signature song. (Incidentally, the single stalled at 12 on the charts! Her weakest appearance of any single on her Greatest Hits!!) After years and years of being on the ballot, she FINALLY won the CMA Female of the Year in 99, after critics said she should have gotten years ago. She won that same award last year, and has won two ACM's in a row, as well as the AMA for top Country Female. She has 5 number ones to her credit. The fact that she has less than Faith amazes me, but I guess the public likes catchy songs, not ones with meaning and knockout voices. She has donated so much time and money to charities, especially women and children. Her children come first, not her career. On top of everything else, I happen to think she is DAMN nice looking! Look at her eyes! I guess when you aren't blonde, you don't get noticed as much, but maybe now that she is racking up awards, people will go back and listen more to her stuff. You will be hard pressed to find a song that doesn't actually SAY something, as opposed to just being catchy and bouncy. Obviously, I can't say enough about her. I have never quite heard a voice like hers. I honestly wouldn't talk about her so much if she wasn't so overlooked by the mainstream. I have seen her hold notes and just blow me away. Ok, shut up Adam. Faves-Whatever You Say, O Holy Night, I Love You, A Great Disguise, Here in My Heart, Make Me Believe, Happy Girl, Blessed, Do What You Do, It's My Time, Be That Way, Anything's Better Than Feeling the Blues, The Time Has Come, Cry on the Shoulder of the Road, Swingin' Doors. I'll stop now. Hope I wasn't TOO annoying! Paul McCartney-WOW! My fave female singer of all time to one of my fave male singers, despite his increasing ego! Should never have trusted Michael Jackson. For that matter, should never have recorded Say Say Say. That is just a HUGE blemish on his career, and was SO glad it wasn't on Wingspan! I have such childhood memories with his many singles (played so much as a kid) and then discovering his album cuts as an adult was every bit as fun! Don't call yourself a Macca fan without owning Band on the Run! Wingspan does a good job, but you need all 10 cuts! The amazing thing about Paul is, even his 90's stuff was not bad! Won't make us forget Band on the Run or Venus and Mars, but for a guy his age, not bad! Faves-Magneto and Titanium Man, Bluebird, Every Night, Rockestra Theme, Back Seat of My Car, Listen to What the Man Said, Maybe I'm Amazed, 1985, Too Many People, Goodnight Tonight. McCoys-Rick Zehringer's band before becoming Rick Derringer! Heard Hang on Sloopy enough in my life, but they do a decent cover of Fever. Small notch on the list of 60s American bands. Faves-Fever, Hang on Sloopy. Gene McDaniels-sorta non-rock from the early 60s. Most people here probably don't know/remember him. I just know my dad had a reissue single of Point of No Return/Chip, Chip. No big deal. Faves-those. Michael McDonald-I don't know what it is, but his voice always annoyed me! (Don't hate me Kitty!!) I didn't like Minute and Believes from the Doobs, although I don't mind Takin' it to the Streets. I'm sorry, I just don't think much of Sweet Freedom, Ya Mo Be There or On My Own. (BTW-did you know Martina sang background on a cover of On My Own ) Faves-I Keep Forgettin'. And you? ?

Here we go! Martina McBride - An exceptionally talented lady who has rapidly become one of my favorite female country artists. As we've talked about in YMs and emails, up until about 7 months ago, I only knew two of her songs, 'Wild Angels' and 'Blessed', and though I enjoyed both, I had never really investigated further. Then at Christmastime, I heard her rendition of 'O Holy Night' on the radio and was amazed by the power and clarity of her voice - one of the best I'd ever heard. Since then, I've heard a number of her other songs and seen her perform on TV several times, and she is always flawless. I'm especially impressed by the material she chooses - it isn't easy to sing convincingly about such emotional subjects, but she does a superb job. Thank you for introducing me to her music. Favorites: Concrete Angel, Independence Day, Wild Angels, Blessed, A Broken Wing. Paul McCartney - My favorite performer of all time. I've loved his music ever since I was very young, and his 1974 classic 'Band on the Run' is my all-time favorite song, and has been for 29 years. Such an incredibly talented musician, singer and songwriter, and unquestionably one of the most influential figures in pop history. I would love to have the chance to meet him someday and let him know how much his music has meant to me over the years. Favorites (and there are many!): Band on the Run, 1985 (love it!), Let 'Em In, Jet, Listen to What the Man Said, Silly Love Songs, My Love, Bluebird, Venus and Mars/Rock Show, Junior's Farm, Hi Hi Hi, Maybe I'm Amazed, Another Day, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, With a Little Luck, Getting Closer, Arrow Through Me, Rockestra, Goodnight Tonight, Coming Up, Take It Away, Here Today, Say Say Say, The Man, The World Tonight. McCoys - I've grown tired of 'Hang on Sloopy', but I love 'Fever' - very catchy song! Gene McDaniels - Can't say I'm familiar with him. Michael McDonald - I've always liked his music, and even have his solo album If That's What It Takes. He does have a very distinctive voice - right away, you know it's him. Favorites: I Keep Forgettin', I Gotta Try, Sweet Freedom, Yah Mo B There.

Martina McBride - Ozzy - Wow! I first heard her back in '93 with Independence Day and right from that point I knew that there was something special - her voice was just amazing .
I have really got into her music in the past year (thank you Adam! for all the suggested tunes, that I wasn't familiar with ) . Where Would You Be REALLY knocked me out , she seemed to hold some of those notes forever.Concrete Angel sure tugs at the old heart strings too . She has the most stunning eyes I have ever seen - just gorgeous!
Faves include : I Love You , Here in My Heart , Phones are Ringing All Over Town ,Whatever You Say ,Make Me Believe, Blessed , Anything and Everything , Cry on The Shoulder of The Road , It's My Time and Concrete Angel.
Paul McCartney - His solo work as well as The Beatles catalogue of music has been such a HUGE part of my life , I just don't know where to start! - Apart from the kids records I heard as a toddler their music was the first "grown - up" music that I remember.
I still don't quite understand that whole "changing of song credits" fiasco - why after all these years? they split the royalties 50 / 50 anyway regardless of who wrote it? maybe I just haven't heard all the details surrounding it - I don't know. Anyway the music is what matters here and he's made his fair share of fine tunes , and he is one FINE bass player!
Faves - Where do I begin? - Hi Hi Hi , Jet , Too Many People , I've Had Enough , Band On The Run ,With a Little Luck, Backward Traveller, My Love , The Mess , Maybe I'm Amazed , My Brave Face , Back Seat of My Car , No More Lonely Nights , Best Friend , Another Day , Oh Woman , Oh Why ? ,Venus and Mars Rock Show , Big Barn Bed , Live and Let Die , Heart of The Country , Take It Away , Silly Love Songs , This One , Figure of Eight , Once Upon a Long Ago , Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey , Helen Wheels , The World Tonight , Give Ireland Back To The Irish , 1985 , Mrs.Vanderbilt , Bluebird, Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me) , Every Night and Put it There .
McCoys - Rick is an amazing guitarist! - Love Hang On Sloopy! Faves: Hang On Sloopy , and their cover of Come On Let's Go.
Gene McDaniels - The name is familiar but I'm drawing a blank - d'oh!
Michael McDonald - I don't mind him , I do a pretty good impression of him LOL - I like his work with the doobies better than his solo material , but If I had to choose a couple of faves I would pick: Sweet Freedom and I Keep Forgettin' .

Martina McBride - Saw her on a PBS show singing with the Chieftans last Sunday. Good voice, I guess I'll have to investigate.
Paul McCartney - What he did up through about 1978 his is very best (with the exception of No More Lonely Nights). I'm just not impressed with what he's done since 1978. IMO Band on the Run is a must for any album/CD/cassette collection (I have it on CD & cassette). Such a great album. Also wrote the greatest love song (again imo) ever (Maybe I'm Amazed). Favorites: Band on the Run, Maybe I'm Amazed, Mull of Kintyre, My Love, 1985, Junior's Farm, Listen to What the Man Said.
McCoys - Hang on Sloopy hangs on as a 60s party song these days. Way overplayed.
Gene McDaniels - The only song I know by him is A Hundred Pounds of Clay
Michael MacDonald - Never thought the Doobie Brothers were as good after Mike joined the group. Still bought the albums, but they weren't as much fun. I didn't follow his solo career, but do remember the duets. Only one I liked was On My Own.

It's a testament to my obliviousness that I totally didn't guess why you were so excited about today's post. Martina McBride - She's not on my radar at all. I don't know any of her songs except for her version of "O Holy Night" which is played frequently by a local radio station here during the holidays. I'll say that she has a nice clear voice on that track but it doesn't stand out for me. You have suggested several times that I check her out and I swear I will someday. Paul McCartney - is it strange that I have a hard time considering all of the great music Paul made in the 70s as solo stuff? What about giving some props to Denny Laine and Linda? Anyway, I love Wings and if there were two groups that were played in the house of my childhood 24/7 it was them and Steely Dan. I like the post-Beatles era for Paul so much better than the 60s. Faves: Band On The Run, No More Lonely Nights, My Love, With A Little Luck, Maybe I'm Amazed, Silly Love Songs, Beware My Love McCoys - I only know "Hang On Sloopy" which I don't like at all. Gene McDaniels - Gee, his name is so familiar. Is he the "100 lbs. Of Clay" guy? If it is then I always get his stuff mixed up with Jackie Wilson. I think there's also a song of his I like called "Tower of Strength". Michael McDonald - LOVE him! LOVE his voice! LOVE everything about him! Okay I'll stop now. Seriously, I'm definitely in the camp that thinks McDonald made the Doobie Bros better. And I like a lot of his solo stuff too. I was at an outdoor concert of his in 1999 and it was one of the most enjoyable musical experiences ever. [small voice] I also find him strangely attractive [/small voice]. As my friend Christy says - "he looks like he'd be a good hugger". Faves: Take It To Heart, Hey Girl, I Keep Forgettin, By Heart, On My Own

Well, well, well, Martina IS a special lady!! I always like to hear her whenever I "catch" her, but actually I am just beginning to listen to country music again. (And I'm working my way up to the newer stuff) But I will say that I LOVED her performance right there in the middle of Colorado Blvd to start the Rose Parade a couple of years ago! She did a GREAT job!!!! (Sorry I don't have more!) Paul McCartney: Well, I hope he and his new bride are very happy! (and I am actually NOT be faceitous) Anyway, I suppose I need to rediscover "Wings"--and he was always my favorite Beatle! The McCoys-I THINK they appear on the one Hullabaloo DVD that I do not yet own. ;D Anyway, I still remember when "Hang on Sloopy" was in the Top 10. I'll have to look up their version of "Fever" Gene McDaniels--That name sounds familiar; is he the one who sang "Tower of Strength"? If so, I'll count that as a favorite. Michael McDonald-One time, during the time when he was appearing on "everybody's" records, I was watching SCTV and they had a skit in which "Micheal" kept having to drive his sports car REALLY fast to make it just in time to record his part on each of a bunch of records. (Doesn't sound very funny, does it? Oh well, something's been lost in the translation--becase it WAS! ;D) I don't think he played Michael, (Tho' maybe he did) but I recall Rick Moranis being in that skit.

Wow, it took me a hour just to read that! LOL!! Martina McBride...I enjoy her music and like her voice. I don't own any of her records, but I have heard her on the radio when I'm in a country music mood. I don't agree with your blonde theroy, look at Shania...I think it's more like how much skin you're willing to show! LOL!! Faves Independence Day, Concrete Angel and O Holy Night. Paul McCartney...I liked him more when he was with the Beatles. Not a big fan of Wings, but I do like some songs. Faves Maybe I'm Amazed and Silly Loves Songs. McCoys...Who?? Oh yeah, Hang on Sloopy...it's an OK song. Gene McDaniels...Who?? Sorry, don't know him. Michael McDonald...I guess if you like the sound of mumbling, he's good!! LOL!! I really don't like him.

Martina McBride- OK--- here we go. I think Martina was probably the greatest tennis player in the history of womens tenn- what Oh-- MCBRIDE. OK. Ken McBride was a stalwart pitcher for the Angels back in the-- huh??? Oh- MARTINA McBride. Who's that??? Seriously, I knew very little about Martina before joining first YL and then the Click. I'm not a huge Country fan, but I thought I'd check her out (after all that's one of the main reasons for being on a music board) and I REALLY like her voice. I'll admit I have only heard a few of her songs but I like what I've heard, and will continue to investigate. Faves: I Love You, Whatever You Say, Wrong Again. And, Adam, you're right she's pretty hot looking. Paul McCartney- What can I say -- Second only to Elvis in pop/rock music if you include The Beatles, Wings, and his solo stuff. Such a greatwriter and musician. So many favorites (not including the Beatles stuff): Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, Another Day, Band On The Run, My Love, Sally G, Silly Love Songs, Freedom, Listen To What The Man Said, Live and Let Die, Jet, Coming Up, Let Em In. McCoys- Hang On Sloopy is a great song, but was grossly overplayed. The cover of Fever, IMO, is Hang On Sloopy again, with different words. Don't like it at all. The best version of Fever, IMO, is by Little Willie John. Check it out if you have the chance. Gene McDaniels- Not bad in a somewhat limited way. His biggest hit was100 Pounds of Clay -- pretty good song (check out the cover "200 Pounds of Clay" by Dee Dee Sharpe- Dedicated to Chubby Checker). The rest (Tower Of Strength, Pointof No Return, and to a lesser extent,Chip Chip) were sound-alikes. Michael McDonald- Decent singer. Not one of my faves. Sorta like On My Own and I Keep Forgettin'. Sorta don't like Yah Mo B There.

Wow! I thought I was the only person who got totally obsessive over singers and memorized facts about their lives. Guess not... Martina - Love, love, love her. One of my all-time favorite country singers. You're right, she's got an AMAZING voice and not many country singers today can hold a note like Martina. She seems like such a wonderful person too, and that is so refreshing in times like these. I only have one of her albums (her greatest hits), but it's a fave. I don't think there's a single song on it that I don't like. And she's a wonderful live performer too! Faves - My Baby Loves Me, Safe in the Arms of Love, Wild Angels, Love's the Only House, When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues, Concrete Angel, Valentine, Wrong Again. Also, Where Would You Be and Whatever You Say - These songs are amazing. Martina's voice is so strong on them and I love the whole sad love song thing. Especially Whatever You Say. I can't type WOW big enough here. A Broken Wing - I like to think that this song is kind of about me. Tired of putting up with her crappy life, the woman leaves a note saying goodbye and lets the curtains blow in the breeze as she flies out of there. Ah. Independence Day - This is the most amazing song. It's so sad and tragic, but at the same time it's a song of praise and...freedom. I've been so in love with this song for years. The only one on here worth talking about today, in my opinion. Sorry, I'm just not a McCartney fan.

Martina McBride-Well, I can't say much, because I don't listen to any country made after the 70's, but I've caught bits and pieces on CMT from time to time. She's pretty, and she has a nice voice. I'm just the wrong person to ask..... Sir Paul-Two words: Seventh grade!! That was when my Macca obsession was at it's peak, and Wings music will always remind me of that wonderful year when I started "coming of age", liking girls and so forth. He's an "Elite" on my top 5 list, right up there with Brian! Even his weaker 70's albums such as "Wild Life" had songs that I still hold dear. He started losing it after the MJ duets, though... AWWW, what the heck! I'll do an album-by-album, like I did with Zeppelin McCartney-Interesting solo debut. He played every instrument, which not many people did in those days, but if anyone had the talent to pull it off, it was him! A bit "unfinished" sounding in places, but full of great moments. 3 stars*** Ram-Slight imprivement over McCartney, this album had more of a direction. Of course Linda's singing took it down a notch, but there were still many great moments. 3 1/2 stars ***1/2 Wild Life-The album that even HE hates.. Maybe I'm sentimental, but I like it. A couple of cuts, like "I Am Your Singer" ARE pretty bad, but he was re-inventing himself, working with a new band, trying out new things. The brief accoustic piece midway through side 2 is worthwile. 3 stars*** Red Rose Speedway-With the exception of "Loup (First Indian On The Moon)", a great album! (Seriously, I don't know WHAT they were smokin' when they did THAT cut!!) Actually, he sounds kind of stoned throughout the album, but in a good way, for the most part. 4 stars**** Band On The Run-The quintesential 70's album! Recorded in Lagos (WHY did he want to record THERE?), this album captures something that he would never capture again. The most cohesive, intense, and focused album he ever made! 5 stars***** Venus And Mars-How do you follow up a masterpiece? Why, go to the "Big Easy", of course!! Recorded during Mardi Gras (yet, I don't hear it in the music.. Except the spoken intro to "Listen to What The Man Said" sounded kinda Cajun). His career and his music was evolving, and this album was another step in the right direction! 4 stars**** Wings At The Speed Of Sound-UH OH! Lead vocals by Linda, Joe English, and Jimmy McColoch, take this album down several notches. Maybe Paul was feeling burnout, or maybe he wanted to make it more of a "band" effort by letting the others sing.. Only Denny Laine's 2 songs stand out alongside Paul's. Even some of Paul's songs were sub-par.. "Beware My Love" and the two hits were great, though! 3 stars*** I'm skipping the live album because I've never owned it. London Town-Much better than "Speed Of Sound", but still not up to Paul's standards. A few songs are pointless, but "Girlfriend", "I've Had Enough", "Deliver Your Children", and "Name and Address" stand out alongside the hit single "With A Little Luck". 3 1/2 stars***1/2 Back To The Egg-This was the album I didn't buy until I was an adult (it was very hard to find in the mid 80's, when he was switching record companies. I think it was out of print for a while.) I bought the CD around 1991, put it in my player, and hit the "shuffle" button by mistake. It went straight to "So Glad To See You Here". HELLO!! What a rockin' track!! Then I played the rest of the album and LOVED it right away. My personal favorite, and even though many may not agree, I'm going to give it 5 stars*****!!! McCartney II-For years, I thought this album was garbage. But I'm sure there are many musicians who would love to go through McCartney's garbage to find great ideas! The live version of "Coming Up" was included as a bonus record with the original lp, but oddly enough, is NOT a bonus track on the CD. There are a couple of interesting synth-pop (almost New Wave sounding) instrumentals on side 2, as well as a beautiful ballad called "One Of These Days". But the Herbie Hanc0ck-sounding "Temporary Secretary" doesn't really cut it.. 2 1/2 stars**1/2 Tug Of War-It's good, but I don't think it's as good as a lot of people say it is. "Take It Away", "Somebody Who Cares" and "Dress Me Up As a Robber" are probably the best cuts. Oh, yeah, and "Ebony & Ivory". 3 stars*** Pipes Of Peace-This album also has its moments, not GREAT, but listenable. If I had to choose between this and Tug Of War, I'd choose this. IMO, "The Man" is the only song he did with MJ that was really good, and it wasn't even a hit. A shame..... 3 1/2 stars***1/2 Give My Regards To Broadstreet-I hate re-recordings! The new songs were good, I've never seen the movie. But I HATE re-recordings!!! 2 stars (ouch)** Press To Play-Never got into it, but never really gave it a chance.... So I won't rate it. The only album I have after that is Flaming Pie, which is probably his best work in years. OK, on to the rest: McCoys-Three hit wonder, but they were three great hits! Gene McDaniels-"Tower Of Strength" is funny, the trombone makes me think of a crying elephant (must be all those cartoons I watched as a kid). Michael McDonald-I'm a big fan. But I'm too burned out from McCartney to say much more......

Still bought the albums, but they weren't as much fun. I didn't follow his solo career, but do remember the duets. Only one I liked was On My Own. OH NO!!! I missed that special with the Chieftans!! Dodger, why didn't you tell me??? I didn't let you down with Collective Soul did I? You won't be disappointed!!
