Billy Joel sang about his "Uptown Girl", in which 'uptown' had the connotation of being the wealthy area. But "Uptown" was designated as an area of poverty when sung by The Crystals.

I had heard that Back in the USSR was a tribute to the Beach Boys style -- Anyway --- The Beatles were a British Invasion act that road in on the coattails of Gerry and the Pacemakers. Just wanted to see if anybody was awake. Swith the names of the two groups - but Gerry is the next link.

ACTUALLY.......... Mike was thinking of Chuck Berry's BACK in the USA, not Steve Miller's song. Chuck's style influenced the early Beach Boys sound, so much so that Brian rewrote Sweet Little Sixteen as Surfin' USA. (Another USA which may be adding to the confusion.) Chuck is actually credited on the BB song. And then obviously with the background harmonies and the singing of the different type of Russian girls (ala California Girls), was a BB tribute from the Beatles.

In the Compleat Beatles documentary, Gerry demonstrated the emerging rock style that influenced the Beatles by playing Jambalaya, a song recorded by, among others, the Carpenters.
